Experience Overview
Dramatic, imposing, unforgettable: the Dolomites rival any mountain range on Earth for natural beauty. Join an International Mountain Leader to walk through the national parks of Fanes-Sennes and Dolomiti di Sesto, trekking among the jagged peaks and gazing over the extraordinary three spires of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. We stay in the traditional village of Villabassa, where spectacular scenery meets a fiercely proud Tyrolean heritage. That’s encapsulated by our home for the week: Hotel Adler, with a wonderful spa and renowned fine-dining restaurant within its 400-year-old walls.
If you want to test yourself, join one of our Activity Level 5 (Challenging) departures. See the Itinerary and Dates & Prices tab for more details.
This trip includes a few of our Citizen Science Departures. These special departures offer you the opportunity to be involved in the collection of freshwater samples during the trip. The environmental DNA information derived from this sample will contribute directly to the eBioAtlas; the world’s largest repository of flora and fauna species data, contributing to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity both locally and globally. Trip For You
Due to the nature of the terrain on this trip, neither walking levels are recommended for vertigo sufferers.
This trip is graded Activity Level 3 (Moderate) or Activity Level 5 (Challenging), date dependent. For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.
We enjoy walks in the same areas on each trip, but the length and difficulty vary according to the walking level. Please make sure you choose the week that best suits your ability.
Most weeks offer Activity Level 3 (Moderate) walking, where we usually walk between five and seven hours per day. The area we are visiting is criss-crossed by a network of long-established trails and walking paths, most well-maintained and waymarked. Even so, paths are rocky and on occasion exposed. A reasonable level of fitness is required for these weeks.
On some weeks, we offer Level 5 (Challenging) walking. On these departures, we usually walk between six and eight hours per day at a steady pace. We use established trails and mountain paths, which are often steep, rocky and more exposed than the Level 3 walks. For these departures, you will need to be surefooted and have a good level of fitness. Some fixed equipment (such as holding onto a steel wire or handrail for security) may be encountered.
The exact itinerary (and therefore the length of each walk) may vary depending on weather conditions or other factors beyond our control. While aiming to always follow the routes described in these trip notes, it will be the leader’s decision to amend the itinerary if and when necessary.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts, five lunches and five dinners, one of which will be an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner.
Please note an evening meal is not included on the first night, as flight schedules can mean a later arrival in Villabassa. Sandwiches or snacks are available at the airport.
For breakfast, the hotel offers a large selection of cereals, fruit, cheese and cold meats, (along with tea and coffee).
Five packed lunches are provided by the hotel. Each morning there is a small buffet with items to make your own lunch (eg bread rolls, ham, salad…). In an effort to minimise the use of plastic and single-use items, the hotel provides paper bag and reusable cutlery.
Head chef Hélène Markart is a devotee of old traditional recipes but is not afraid to give them a modern twist. At the heart of her philosophy is a reliance on local produce, from the local farmer to vegetables from the hotel garden. It’s no surprise to learn her prowess has been favourably reported in reputable guides such as Michelin.
There is a set menu for standard evening meals (usually three or four courses), which may include some local specialties such as Speckknodel (a dumpling dish).
Our gourmet dinner will undoubtedly be the culinary highlight, though as keeping things fresh and seasonal is part of the charm, there’s no way to know quite yet what delights may be served.
Transportation
Transfers to and from the airport, and during the walking activities, will be in a private vehicle (normally minibus). On certain days, we may use public transport.

Recommended arrival time: You’re welcome to arrive any time, though rooms are typically ready in the early afternoon and there’s a welcome briefing in the evening
Airport: Venice (VCE)
Getting to the start hotel
The start hotel is approximately a 3hr 30min drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:
Take an Exodus transfer
Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.
Make your own way
It’s possible to reach the start hotel by public transport, but the journey is complicated. We therefore recommend joining the group transfer where possible. If not, take a cab from directly outside the airport or arrange a private transfer through Exodus for approximately €356 (payable before departure). If you would like further information on joining this trip, please speak to your sales representative.
Catching your return flight
There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for customers who Exodus booked onto a chosen flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales consultant if you wish to join. If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales consultant to arrange an alternative transfer.
Weather Information
In the Dolomites (as always in the mountains) the weather is very changeable. In summer, expect rain on one day in two, which is likely to come in short but heavy, thundery bursts. In the valleys, daytime temperatures range from 12C to 22C (54F to 72F), although 25C (77F) is not unusual. In the mountains, it will be slightly colder. There are always patches of snow remaining on the higher peaks in late May and early November, and sometimes due to unpredictable winter weather, this can remain for a little longer. There is always the possibility of snowfall at any time of the season, therefore you need to be ready for anything, so pack shorts as well as warmer clothes; full waterproofs and sunscreen.
Spending Money
You will need sufficient funds to buy the one lunch and two dinners that are not included. We suggest €8-€12 for lunch and €15-€25 for dinner is sufficient (excluding drinks). If you would like to sample the excellent à la carte menu at Hotel Adler, please allow around €40.
Local taxes: many Italian cities have introduced a tourist tax for non-residents. The local administration is in charge of the tax, which will be collected by the accommodation provider at check-in or check-out. This fee varies depending on the hotel category, the season and number of days of stay. It is usually between €0.50 and €2.50 per person per night. For this trip, please allow around €15, depending on the season, for the week.
Optional excursions:
There are several extra excursions available, exact prices and details will be confirmed locally. The following can be used as a guide:
— Messner Mountain Museum Ripa Brunico: €9 per person — Cheese factory in Dobbiaco: €3.50 admission only, €6.50 including a small cheese tasting, €8.50 including a large cheese tasting — From Villabassa there are regular trains and buses to the different villages of the Pusteria valleys — Day trip to see Ötzi, the iceman, in Bolzano: allow approximately €35 for travel and €13 for entry (train journey involves changes and takes approximately two hours each way)
Tipping
On all Exodus Premium Adventures tipping for any local support staff is included, and will normally be taken care of via your tour leader (or in some cases through our local agent). So need no for any tipping kitty contributions, or to make your own tips during the trip. Our ‘included tips’ will normally cover drivers, local specialist guides, certain hotel staff, and serving staff for included meals. Amounts will be in line with the local standard.
If you wish to make a further tip for some extra special service you may do so. Tips for the tour leader are not included. Whether to tip at all and the amount is entirely at your own discretion, but as a starting point we suggest around €20-€25 per person for the duration of the trip.

The hub of social living will likely be the bar and fireplace room, where you can sip an aperitivo or perhaps a post-dinner gin and tonic, while enjoying the relaxed hubbub with the group (a local crowd often gathers here too). There’s also a good-sized pool for morning dips and a wellness centre with a sauna, steam room, solarium and small fitness centre. Itinerary
Start at Hotel Adler in Villabassa. The leader will give a short briefing to give an overview of the week ahead. The hotel is handily located on the village square, so any free time can be spent with a little stroll around, perhaps up past the church or down to the river. Alternatively, why not soak up the atmosphere with a relaxing drink?
The ideal start to visiting this vast area is a walk straight from the hotel through the very pretty, flower-filled Braies Valley. We walk through small villages and farmland until we reach the magnificent Lago di Braies itself, one of the 297 glacial lakes in the area. It is certainly one of the most beautiful, surrounded by jagged peaks that are reflected in the extraordinary mirror-like surface of the water. We follow the route of SS hostages, the leaders of 19 countries who were freed after the second world war by the inhabitants of Villabassa. Distance: 8mi (13km); ascent: 1,663ft (507m); descent: 521ft (159m) w Extension to the Malga for coffees 1mi (1.5km); ascent 246ft (75m)
Today we explore high pastures and ridges along the Austrian border. We walk steadily exploring the meadows under the ridge of Knieberg. We have great views towards the Rotwand and Monte Popera. Later in the afternoon we visit Alpe Nemes hut, a great spot for a drink and a bite of homemade apple strudel. Distance: 10.25mi (16.5km); ascent: 2,438ft (743m); descent: 2,365ft (721m)
We start at 6,562ft (2,000m) altitude, walking among beautiful wildflowers and ascend to the summit of Strudlekopf (7,579ft/2,310m). We stop at the Durrenstein hut in the early afternoon to try the local Kaiserschmarrn speciality. On a clear day, from the summit, we can enjoy views of the Tre Cime, Monte Piana and Monte Cristallo. Distance: 9.3mi (15km); ascent: 1,640ft (500m); descent: 3,281ft (1,000m)
A free day to relax in the hotel wellness centre or take a self-guided cycle around this wonderful area. Alternatively, make your way to Bolzano to visit a museum dedicated to Ötzi, the 5,000-year-old 'iceman' whose remarkably well-preserved body was found in 1991 high on a glacier on the Austro-Italian frontier. Or you could journey to the attractive provincial capital of Lienz in Austria; or closer to the cosy town of Brunico.
We enjoy a memorable walk under the Three Chimneys, or Tre Cime di Lavaredo (or Drei Zinnen in German). Set amid one of the classic mountain groups of this area, our walk around these impressive peaks is certainly a highlight of the week. Tonight the restaurant will delight your palate with an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner. Distance: 6.83mi (11km); ascent: 1,817ft (554m); descent: 1,765ft (538m)
To complete the week, we take the amazing eastern approach route up Monte Piana. After 1,969ft (600m) ascent we find ourselves upon the flat-topped mountain surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Dolomites. It is the site of an open-air museum dedicated to the first world war, where trenches, dugouts and shell craters can be seen among the alpine flowers. On our return, we have time to spot the brilliant blue gentians, alpine white edelweiss and bright saffron that create a beautiful scene around Lake Misurina, thanks to the beautiful pink of the limestone rock. Distance: 8.5mi (13.7km); ascent: 2,450ft (747m); descent: 2,857ft (871m)
Enjoy your final breakfast in Hotel Adler and take the opportunity to reflect on what has been an inspirational escape in the Dolomites. After, it’s time to start your return journey home.

I'll Be Back I have heard about the Dolomites for years. I wasn’t prepared for how majestic they were. They are unique and a must see for any hiker. Most Inspirational Moment Waking up everyday to sunshine and knowing that each hike was going be special. Here it was the second week of October and hiking in shorts and a short sleeve shirt. Six weeks earlier I had done the Tour Du Mont Blanc in rain and snow. How exhilarating to actually see mountains at their finest. Thoughts on Group Leader We had 24 hikers and 2 guides--that was a first for me on an Exodus trip. It turned out to be a great idea. Our leaders--Jeff Oonk and Jenny Smith--on a daily basis put together 2 separate hikes that offered us an option of scenery and challenge. We would meet up somewhere on the trail and finish out the day together. They put a lot of thought and effort into planning our hikes and it was great to have a choice depending on your hiking mood for the day. They were some of the best leaders I have ever walked with. Advice for Potential Travellers I totally agree with my fellow walker, Mala, and her comments. It is a 3+ hike and more so if the trail became wet or muddy. The trails we were on had a lot of up and down portions plus loose scree and slabs of rocks. Poles were a must and if need be could be borrowed from the hotel. Having the right boot and sock combination is always a must. Your feet have to be toughened up for these kind of trips--more blisters than I have ever witnessed. Suggestions This was my first Premium Adventure Trip with Exodus. The Hotel Alder was one of the best hotels I have stayed in, period. I opted for a room upgrade and I was blown away by the features and the view. The hotel staff were outstanding and they really looked out for you. We were the last guests of the season and the hotel was going to close down for a period before reopening for the winter but the service never let down.

Amazing in every way! Great trip, hugely helped by weather in first week of October (blue skies. mid 20s with hardly any clouds!); stunning picture perfect scenery, great guides and group. Most Inspirational Moment I don't think I can find 1 moment ! I was really happy to be there all the time and to be able to complete the walks. Thoughts on Group Leader We had 2 - Jeff and Jenny. Both amazing. Jeff is very inspirational and his knowledge of nature and his willingness to impart this to us is special. Both guides were very caring and motivational...they helped the group members a lot in various ways eg best techniques with poles, after falls (yes we had some) and how to overcome fear or just complete the walk at your own pace. Advice for Potential Travellers - it's a 3 walk but more like 3+ really so be prepared for some fairly steep ascents in sections; (and descents with loose scree). -having all the gear helps especially poles and sun hat/cap and also a bladder plus a bottle as many of the walks don't have the facility to refill. -definitely visit the museums in Brunech on day off. So worth it.

Wonderful walking in the spectacular Dolomites! We thoroughly enjoyed this trip! Beautiful scenery, great variety of walks, lovely hotel, great, knowledgeable leader and a lovely group to share the experience with! Most Inspirational Moment We loved the early morning sunrise walk to the Tres Cimes de Lavaredo - walking in the moonlight was magical. We had the place to ourselves and could watch as the sunlight transformed the landscape - thank you Jeff for suggesting and organising this! It also meant that as most people were making their way up, we were on our way down! We also really enjoyed the climb up Mount Piana and wondering around the remains of the WW1 trenches - spectacular! Thoughts on Group Leader Jeff was a wonderful leader. Helpful, enthusiastic, kind, organised and willing to share his knowledge. He was always willing to go that extra mile! Advice for Potential Travellers If you have a reasonable level of fitness - go on this tour! Take some walking poles - I found them a great help. Take lots of layers as the weather is always changing!

Wonderful trip A wonderful walking holiday in arguably the most stunning mountain range in Europe. Despite some mixed weather, the range and quality of walks was excellent. The base hotel is excellent, with very good facilities, including small gym, pool, sauna and steam rooms. All staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming. The restaurant provides good quality food generally but less so for vegetarians. Rooms are very clean and comfortable. Most Inspirational Moment The dawn walk to Tre Cime - simply stunning! Thoughts on Group Leader Jef is outstanding. He shares his knowledge of the area and environment and his enthusiasm is infectious. He is extremely well organised and provides excellent support and guidance to the group as a whole and very sensitively to individuals which was greatly appreciated. He is very approachable and sociable and certainly helped our group to simply focus on enjoying our holiday in good company. Advice for Potential Travellers If you enjoy walking in spectacular mountains then just book, you won't be disappointed. Remember the weather in the mountains can be very varied. We travelled in August and the weather ranged from warm and sunny in the valley to very cold up the mountains. Take full waterproofs, plenty of layers and hat and gloves - you may need them all! Take swimwear for the excellent pool, sauna, steam rooms etc in the hotel. If your guide offers you the opportunity to go on a dawn walk to Tre Cime, do it! One of the most spectacular and memorable walks I have ever been on. Certainly worth the early start. Suggestions Plenty of excellent cycling available on the day off. Excellent cycle paths avoiding main roads and e-bikes available. Would recommend the cycle to Cortina on an old rail track - about 42 miles return but very manageable on good e-bikes.

Another great Exodus trip A great holiday. Stunning scenery, great hikes and an excellent leader. The spa at the end of the day is a great place to relax. Most Inspirational Moment The sunrise walk to the Tre Cime (Drei Zinnen) - one of the best hikes I’ve ever done. It was well worth getting up very early to start walking at 4.45am. We had the benefit of the full moon and didn’t need to use torches as we began walking under the Tre Cime. We reached the saddle and the Tre Cime hut before sunrise and then settled down and watched as the day’s first rays of sunlight hit the top of the peaks. An absolutely magical moment. One of the other benefits was that we were at this iconic area before the crowds arrived. As we descended, the rest of the hiking world were climbing up. Thank you Jeff for proposing this. Thoughts on Group Leader Jeff was an excellent leader. His briefings were clear and he commanded respect from the group. I felt safe hiking with him and felt he would be able to deal with any eventuality. He bonded well with the group and had a good sense of humour. He was passionate and very knowledgable about the natural world. He imparted his knowledge in an interesting and enthusiastic way. Advice for Potential Travellers Take your swimming stuff so you can use the spa. Even if you don’t feel like swimming you can relax in the sauna or steam room at the end of the day. Consider hiring bikes on the free day. It was our first experience of e-bikes. They were great on the 20 mile, traffic free cycle route to Cortina. If you want to get some exercise use ‘eco’ up the hills, if you want a more relaxing experience put it into ‘turbo’. Take plenty of layers and hats and gloves. It can get cold when you stop at the top of the mountains even in summer. If you get offered the sunrise walk - go for it! Suggestions Another great trip. I’m looking forward to some more adventures with Exodus!

Suggestions Thank you

Amazing trip and guide A truly amazing week in Italy. Our guide, Jeff, was extremely knowlegable and made sure that any issues or concenrs we had, were resolved. The planned walks each day were perfectly suited to the group and jeff was able to switch the areas we walked, depending on the weather. I’d recommend this tour to anyone who would like to enjoy walking in the Dolomites, see the best parts and stay at a very nice hotel with excellent food. Most Inspirational Moment Walking early on a day to see the sunrise over the Three Chimneys Thoughts on Group Leader Jeff was an excellent leader. He was able to answer all our questions, either about the area or ecology or historical references and nothing was too much bother. Advice for Potential Travellers Take waterproofs as the weather can change quickly. It's worth hiring bikes on a day off and use the excellent cycle paths to visit nearby towns. Suggestions An excellent trip all round.

Fabulous week walking in Dolomites A Fantastic week of varied and spectacular walking with a great group of likeminded people. Stayed in a lovely, family run hotel set in a small rural village. Abundance of good food/wine and had a lovely pool and sauna to be able to relax after a day’s walking. Been travelling with Exodus for 25 years and this was up there with the best of their trips. Most Inspirational Moment So many to choose from! The beautiful Lago di Braies on the first day with it's incredible blue and crystal clear water Ten minutes watching a family of stoats playing in a woodpile above the village The incredible variety of wildflowers and butterflies, our guide pointed out a lovely Ladies Slipper Orchid hidden under a log which I had never seen before The Spectacular views of the mountains for our picnic lunches and breaks The wonderful town of Bruneck on our free day, easy to get to by train and full of gems such as the castle, cable car, and fabulous museums of Lumen and Messner with incredible views and a great restaurant with incredible views over the valley A wonderful family run hotel with good food and wine and a lovely pool for a swim after a long days walk Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent, Jeffry was a great leader. A good communicator, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. He worked hard to make sure everyone was safe and making the most of their trip. He was super fit, and competent in mountain situations. I had total faith in him and his advice. Also had a wealth of knowledge of flora and fauna. Would have no hesitation travelling with him again, one of the best I have encountered! Advice for Potential Travellers This is not a walk in the park, but perfectly doable if yo are a reasonably fit and active walker. There are a few exposed and tricky bits to negotiate, and if you are very afraid of heights then it's probably not for you, but I am not particularly comfortable with heights and nothing worried me unduly. The guide was very mindful of helping and advising on the more tricky bits. If you have likes and dislikes with food as well as intolerances, then make sure the hotel know in advance as most of the menus are pretty set. If you don't like fish, then say so as one night was 4 courses of fish. Personally I thought the food was of good quality and plenty of it with lunches also included, I felt that it was good value Suggestions I thoroughly recommend this trip, it surpassed my expectations and felt that it earned it's premium billing.

Dolomites I loved the trip for the hiking routes and sceneries. Thoughts on Group Leader Just ok. This was the 6 th exodus trip for me. I would rank my leaders in the bottom of the list. Advice for Potential Travellers Not sure if the meals are worth the premium price.

Awesome experience Amazing scenery, almost surreal because the shape of the mountains is so unique. Excellent hotel with great food. Very flexible and responsive guide. A great variety in the chosen walks. Most Inspirational Moment Viewing the 3 peaks from a fairly close distance. Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent. Friendly and responsive to the needs of the group. Advice for Potential Travellers In May there was still snow at the top across land which had some old WW1 trenches. Need to proceed very carefully. Suggestions Great hotel with spa facilities, great food, excellent guide, huge variety in the walks. We were also blessed with a great group of people who bonded well.
