Journey to Mt Koya, a religious centre founded in 816 by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi. The train ride up the mountain is possibly one of the finest rail journeys in Japan. For the final steep ascent, switch to funicular and then hop on a bus to reach the monastery.
In the evening, dine on shojin-ryori, typical vegetarian cuisine, and relax in a yukata, or kimono.

I will be honest, I do not know a lot of friends or family members interested in this style of travel, hence why I choose G Adventures. I like to be able to travel solo, without feeling lonely, but most people I know don't have the time, money, or interest to go on the adventurous travels G Adventures offers.

The tour enabled me to see so much more of China and Japan than would have been possible if I'd been travelling independently in the same timescales. I was particularly impressed with the China leg of the trip, primarily due to the CEO, Howard who went above and beyond what would be expected to ensure all members of the group had an excellent experience. He was always aware of the needs of individual group members -for example if anyone fell behind the pace of the group, or if they needed extra advice about practical issues such as locating vegetarian food - and would do everything possible to adjust his approach to ensure everyone felt accommodated and supported at all times. He routinely imparted detailed cultural, social and historical information, be it about the Forbidden City or daily farmers market, greatly enhancing our experience. He really did think of everything and made our experience of everyday practicalities, such as travelling on public transport as smooth as possible. Howard really is a great asset and I hope he',ll be working with G Adventures some more, so other travellers benefit from his support and have a similar wonderful experience of his vast and beautiful country.

It was an exceptional experience, I loved all the excursions and recommendations. The only item I felt that could have been improved upon would be having more time in Tokyo. Maybe instead of spending a night sleeping over at the Inn with the hot springs, which was admittedly a great time. It may have been better to arrive in Tokyo so it was not so rushed. There was more things to do in Tokyo and not much to do once we arrived at the Inn. Similarly an extra day in Beijing to see one of their gardens or other attractions

really enjoyed my week in China and that was down in a great part to our guide, Howard, apart from the amazing sites to took us to, his hard work made the week so good, he gave us lots of interesting information and context about the sites we visited and also took us to some great places such as the Muslim market in Xi?an. He worked hard to make sure that the group stayed together (not an easy task) and that everyone understood what was happening, meeting times and the day?s agenda. He got us little snacks each day and generally went all out to make sure we had a great experience. He also made a particular effort making sure vegetarians had plenty to eat and pointed out what was what in the food markets. I was expecting a hungry time in China but because of his consideration, the street food was one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip. In the Japan leg .. we got to all the major sites without any hassle - it was a great introduction to the country and I also enjoyed travelling on public transport with local people.

This was our fourth trip with you, so you must be doing something right. However, I have some reservations about recommending the second half of the tour, mainly due to the fast pace and the inept guide.

I've been on several G Adventures trips and enjoyed them. The groups and guides have been tens (Ecuador and Peru.). This Japan-China trip',s busy schedule was tiring and less enjoyable. The China guide was excellent but the Japan guide poor.

Hotel locations were too far from museums/sightseeing and other historical sites. We were about 90 minutes by train and taxi to get to downtown Shanghai river cruise. We probably got great price on hotel but spent way too much time traveling to tourist attraction - Beijing, Shanghai and Xian.

The trip was so much better than we expected. The CEO's were brilliant. The trip was an express trip to China an Japan but we didn't feel rushed. We felt we saw the best of the old and new.

This type of travel isn't suitable for everyone as the high use of public transport means a lot of bag carrying

Overall, I had a fantastic experience. Since my trip was essentially two different G Adventures trips put together, I think it makes the most sense to review each separately. Booking experience: I essentially found and booked the trip on my own without the initial assistance of an agent. Once I booked, my agent Ingrid contacted me quickly which was great. Given that this was my first G Adventures tour, I would have preferred a little more information about the tour experience, what to expect, specific hotel information, etc after booking but this did not diminish my overall experience.. Also, I had trouble obtaining my Chinese Visa due to lack of adequate documentation including both the date of my departure from China and a confirmed flight reservation. I contacted an agent for help but was told flight information is not sent until ~30 days prior to departure. Unfortunately, this was not enough time and I needed to pay an additional service (outside of G Adventures) to help obtain documentation of a flight reservation for purposes of obtaining my Chinese Visa. In the future, flight information (for flights booked through G Adventures) should be sent earlier if a visa is necessary. I also never obtained my actual plane ticket and was not made aware of the time of the flight until the night before I left China for Japan. China ? Howard Hu CEO The China portion of my trip was well organized, but the hotels were often quite out of the way and not close to the city center/major sites. I would prefer more centrally located options. My CEO was somewhat divisive among the group with a very distinct and sometimes aloof personality. He definitely had a vast amount of knowledge about the history and cultural significance of the sites we visited, however, he was not always the best communicator and did not provide a lot in terms of written information. For example, he sometimes seemed annoyed when we asked questions and frequently deferred answering until ?later? but then never provided answers. Specific logistical questions, such as my flight information from China to Japan, often went unanswered despite repeatedly asking. With that being said, I think Howard did an excellent job organizing optional group dinners every night, introducing us to an amazing selection of food and helping to bring the entire group together. He also offered many optional tours during our free time which were fun and informative. I think he excels with smaller groups. At times I did feel a bit rushed through major sights/cities such as Suzhou and Shanghai and wish Howard was able to articulate the intended plans for certain days so that we were able to decide whether or not we preferred to use our limited time in certain cities to explore on our own. Overall, the itinerary was well thought out and flawlessly executed, especially connections from city to city. I wish we had more time to enjoy Suzhou. Japan ? Mayumi Ozawa CEO The Japan portion of my trip was extraordinary! The itinerary was fabulous and I particularly enjoyed the opportunities to stay in the monastery in Koyasan and the ryokan in Hakone. The day to day itineraries were very well organized and hotels were centrally located which was a huge bonus. However, it was my CEO Mayumi who took this entire experience to the next level. From our introductory meeting with her on the first night where'she handed out a packet of detailed information about the entire tour, maps, descriptions of cities, the culture, food and tips for Japan I knew we were in for a treat. Mayumi continued to go above and beyond in terms of service and knowledge. She put together detailed maps and hand outs for every city we visited and offered to take us on incredible walking tours during our ?free time? (and hers!) in each city we visited. Her patience, enthusiasm and overall breath of knowledge were remarkable and I think our entire group felt as if we made a lifelong friend in Mayumi. No question went unanswered and she took time to connect with every single member in our group and checked in with everyone throughout the tour to provide additional information, answer questions and generally make sure we were happy, safe and had everything we needed. She is amazing and simply put, one of a kind! Overall, I was very impressed with my first experience on a G Adventures trip and hope to take more in the future. I was happy with the high level of organization, choice of hotels (despite some of the locations in China), level of planning and the fact that everything seemed to move very smoothly and efficiently. I definitely do not think I could have put together or enjoyed the trip as much had I been responsible for all of the planning on my own, so thank you for a trip of a lifetime!
