Weather Information
Summer is from October to April and the average daytime temperature is 25C-30C (77F-86F). The average night-time temperature is 10C-20C (50F-68F). Winter is from May to September and average temperatures are colder. In general, however, the Cape Town climate is quite mild. Summer is typically dry and warm, but the southeasterly wind can blow up to 43mph (70kph) at least a few times a month. This helps to cool things but can be a little unpleasant if one is walking in exposed areas. Most of the rainfall is in winter but it is frontal rain off the Atlantic. Therefore, it can rain solidly for two days, and in between there will be warm, sunny days. It is fairly common to experience tabletop clouds on the higher mountains. Our programme is flexible enough to accommodate any major changes in weather, and still make it enjoyable.
Spending Money
Meals not included: Dinners cost on average 340-510 rand (US$20‐US$30) per person and lunches are around 135-220 rand (US$8-US$13).
Incidentals: Allow about 170 rand (US$10) per day.
Optional excursions

— Robben Island: 600 rand (US$35). If you would like to book this excursion, please advise us at least four weeks before travel (ideally when you book the trip). We will take all names and the tickets will then be payable locally – this is to avoid disappointment as it is a popular tour. Once you have signed up, we cannot accept cancellations. Refunds will only be issued if we are refunded by the ticket office for adverse weather conditions etc. — Cape Town township and Robben Island tour: 1,600 rand (US$86) per person — Cable car up Table Mountain: 360 rand (US$21) — Zip‐lining at Tsitsikamma National Park: 730 rand (US$43) — Hermanus whale watching by boat (in season): 1,220 rand (US$72) — Extra game drive in Addo: 340 rand (US$20) or 470 rand (US$27.60) depending on the game drive — Schotia Tooth and Claw game drive (near Addo) and bush dinner: 2,500 rand (US$146)
Please note that the Table Mountain cable car closes during winter for its annual maintenance. We advise checking their website for exact dates: https://www.tablemountain.net/
Tipping
Our local staff are paid well and fairly for their work. Tipping is optional but we recommend approximately 80-100 rand (US$4.70-US$5.80) per person per day. You may also want to budget for porter tips if you need help taking your luggage to your rooms.

Accommodation
Hotels and guesthousesWe spend 11 nights in a range of hotels and guesthouses, each well located for our activities and to keep the drives between destinations relatively short. The normal accommodations used on this trip are on the day-to-day itinerary; however, below are a couple of the notable places we stay. De Rust: Housemartin Guest Lodge (nights 5-6) In the small Karoo town of De Rust is the quaint Housemartin Guest Lodge. Owners Theresa and Jan personally welcome every Exodus group that comes to their home and they take great pride in making guests as comfortable as possible. The property has 12 rooms, each with a private veranda leading into the garden. There is also a swimming pool plus beautiful indoor and outdoor dining areas. The meals at the guest lodge are a particular highlight with seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms to create classic South African dishes. Hermanus: Windsor Hotel (nights 7-8) The 120-year-old Windsor Hotel in Hermanus sits opposite Walker Bay, one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world when southern right whales migrate to the bay to breed (July to November). Whale-watching is even possible from the comfort of the hotel restaurant. However, the location of the property is also ideal out of season with a central setting within town and quick access to the 7.5mi (12km) Hermanus Cliff Path.

Itinerary
Welcome to South Africa! Our tour begins in Port Elizabeth, colloquially known as PE, but officially Gqeberha, a Xhosa name for the river that runs through the city. We have a welcome briefing in the evening to discuss the adventures to come. If you have time before, however, you may want to spend the day exploring. Options include several beaches within walking distance, including Humewood Beach, plus city and township tours (payable locally). Accommodation: La Mer Guesthouse (or similar)
This morning, we head to Addo Elephant National Park, home to some 550 elephants (up from just 16 when the park was formed) plus black rhinos, leopards, lions, buffalos, hyenas, zebras, various antelopes and dung beetles. We enjoy a 45-minute game drive in our own vehicle, hoping to spot iconic African wildlife, and have the option of a second (at extra cost). Accommodation: La Mer Guesthouse (or similar)
Today, we head west to the official start of the Garden Route at Storms River in Tsitsikamma National Park. Stretching along the coast, the park, which comprises rocky coastlines, fairytale forests, waterfalls and rivers, gets its name from a local Khoekhoe language meaning ‘place of abundant water’. We can take a 1.2mi (2km) hike in the forest and along suspension bridges, which should take around an hour – other optional walks are also available. The area is a great place for bird enthusiasts with a variety of sea, forest and fynbos (scrubland) species present. Other resident animals include vervet monkeys, chacma baboons and clawless otters. Accommodation: Storms River Mouth Rest Camp chalets (or similar)
We spend the day at Tsitsikamma, where several adventures await. Options include kayaking on the Storms River, zip-lining through the forest or swimming in the ocean. There are also several self-guided walks available, the easiest of which is the suspension walk. The most challenging is the Otter Trail, a well-marked four-hour trek with some small ladders and boulder hopping. This is the only walk that has rocky shoreline sections to it, plus it goes through the forest and passes the Strandloper Cave and ends at a waterfall dropping into the ocean – this trek is only recommended for fit walkers with a good sense of balance. Accommodation: Storms River Mouth Rest Camp chalets (or similar)
We start our day with a visit to Knysna Heads, two tall sandstone cliffs that form a channel through which the turbulent Indian Ocean enters the calmer Knysna Lagoon. We have a bit more time to relax in town before leaving for Oudtshoorn after lunch. As we head inland and over a pass, the landscape changes drastically and we enter the Little Karoo, a much dryer, hotter region. Oudtshoorn itself became renowned for its trade in ostrich feathers and is still the ostrich capital of the world. Our guesthouse is out of town in De Rust, a tranquil, rural Karoo village. Accommodation: Housemartin Guest Lodge (or similar)
We spend today discovering Oudtshoorn and the surrounding highlights. We start by visiting the Cango Caves, an extensive complex of caverns with stalactites and stalagmites. A local guide takes us on an hour’s journey through the limestone caves, which are millions of years old. We then enjoy lunch at Buffelsdrift, where we overlook a waterhole occasionally visited by elephants, giraffes and springboks. In the afternoon, we visit the beautiful Meiringspoort Waterfall and enjoy a 1,640ft (500m) walk along a well-maintained path, which takes about 30 minutes each way. The order in which we do these activities may be reversed. Accommodation: Housemartin Guest Lodge (or similar)
Returning towards the coast, we stop at Mossel Bay and the Dias Museum Complex, which reveals the influence of early Portuguese sailors on South Africa. It’s also home to the Post Office Tree (a 500-year-old milkwood, where seafarers once left letters to be taken home by Portuguese sailors). We then continue to Hermanus, the whale capital of the world. It’s been a long travelling day, so we stretch our legs with a walk along the cliff path. Accommodation: Windsor Hotel (or similar)
Today is a free day to relax and enjoy Hermanus. From June to November, southern right whales are easily spotted from shore as they frolic in Walker Bay. A whale crier sounds his kelp horn when he spots whales off the coast. Those who want can also do a boat-based whale-watching trip. There are also several other activities available from hikes to river cruises and lagoon kayaking, which are available year-round. You could also visit the Whale Museum to learn about the most famous visitors to these shores, or walk the 7mi (11km) cliff path, where you could see indigenous plants, tortoises and mongoose. Accommodation: Windsor Hotel (or similar)
Our next destination is the much-celebrated wine region of South Africa. The industry here, which dates to the 17th century and was heavily influenced by French Huguenots, produces some of the best wines in the world. We have free time to explore the oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch on foot and eat at one of the many restaurants in town. In the afternoon, we enjoy a cellar tour with a sommelier at one of the nearby vineyards. Of course, we also taste a selection of their wines before continuing our journey to Cape Town, the Mother City. Accommodation: City Lodge Hotel Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (or similar)
On our final day, we have the option of doing a township tour, strolling along the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront or exploring various other parts of Cape Town.

Cape Town and the Garden Route review A tour of 15 people. Everyone got on well. Some queries with the itinerary. We passed by fabulous beaches without stopping such as Jeffrey’s Bay and Wilderness, yet stopped at service stations for lunch. This actually happened three times; once shortly after Knysna which would have been far preferable. The rooms were not always very good. In Tsitsikamma the room was very good, but it was at least a mile walk each way for breakfast. I’m fit, but this was classified as a leisurely tour. The rooms in Hermanus and Cape Town overlooked car parks. Our room in Hermanus also had no air conditioning. I expected better accommodation quality from Exodus based on personal recommendations. I would say it is comparable to mid range G Adventures. There were no whales (not the season) but also the waterfall in Karoo had dried up and Storms River was very low water also: Our tubing became bouldering. Cape Town and Cape of Good Hope were magnificent. Food provided or purchased throughout was consistently of high quality. A quite expensive trip when excursions, tips and food is added but we probably got what we paid for. A few simple tweaks could have made things better. Enjoyment – 8 out of 10. VFM – 7 out of 10. I regret not seeing some of the wonderful beaches on-route. Most Inspirational Moment Cape of Good Hope and Schotia game reserve (a paid excursion of £100 pp) - why wasn’t this part of the standard itinerary? Thoughts on Group Leader Petro Pretorious - very good; always cheerful and helpful. A very competent driver. Advice for Potential Travellers Check the season. In March you miss the whales and rivers are low water. Ensure you visit Schotia Game Reserve. South Africa is dangerous. Take high personal precautions over safety and security. Suggestions We definitely managed to pack a lot of things into the trip which was very satisfying.

P&E Rooke - Traveled, February 2024
The Garden Route to Cape Town This was a particularly enjoyable holiday where everything came together to create a fantastic experience. Good weather, a friendly group, an excellent tour leader and a well-constructed itinerary that took us to some wonderful places. The accommodation was of a good standard throughout. The “oceanettes” at Storms River Mouth with their incredible views were outstanding (a pleasant surprise having seen previous travellers’ comments on the wooden cabins there). We very much enjoyed staying in House Martin Guest Lodge too. –South Africa was thought-provoking and very different to our expectations in so many ways. Like Jill Chaloner (previous review), we found it hard to get a Black perspective on the country, and mention of apartheid was largely restricted to our visit to Robben Island, which was a sobering reminder of South Africa’s recent past. Most Inspirational Moment It’s hard to choose one moment as there were so many highlights – Schotia Game Reserve, Chapman’s Peak Drive and the Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain and Robben Island, all were great. However, just spending a sunny hour watching the Indian Ocean breaking on the rocks at Storms River is one of our most memorable moments. Thoughts on Group Leader We were lucky to have Marco who was everything a Tour Leader should be: he gave us the right information clearly and at the right time. He was friendly, had excellent local knowledge of birds and wildlife, and was a safe driver. He put a lot of effort in behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly and we particularly appreciated the lifts to the restaurant at Storms River Mouth as it was quite a walk from the accommodation. There were a couple of birthdays and a marriage proposal on our trip, and Marco made these occasions special for all concerned! Advice for Potential Travellers Pack for cool and wet as well as hot and dry. The Little Karoo is hot, semi-desert, but most of the trip is near the coast with a maritime climate (changeable!). –Do the optional Schotia game reserve trip (it really should be included, not an extra). Bring enough cash to pay for it, it’s cheaper than using a credit card. Take a warm layer on the Schotia visit, it was chilly later in the day (our driver handed out blankets). –The food in SA is plentiful and cheap, as is the wine! There were also options for the vegetarians in the group. –We agree with a previous comment about buying tea, coffee and milk before arriving at Storms River Mouth (for milk, ask nicely at the restaurant). –The visit to the wine estate didn’t amount to much, and beware: their cheese board option for lunch is ridiculously generous. –Our e-tickets stated there was no food on the flight from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth, but in fact a light meal was provided, and the flight attendant was surprised we had been told otherwise. Suggestions We found South Africa to be a safe and friendly country to visit.

A varied and enjoyable trip along the Garden Route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town An enjoyable and interesting insight into South Africa with varied landscapes and experiences. Three game drives at the start with lots of wildlife – elephants, lions and many other animals to see in beautiful locations. We enjoyed stunning mountain and semi-desert scenery, the wild cape coast and the city life and scenery of Cape Town. Accommodation was good throughout the trip– clean, good facilities and well located in each location. The accommodation and food at House Martin Lodge was excellent. We used a large minibus which was spacious enough for our needs and was safely driven by our guide. Our couple of long drives but the scenery helped and regular stops were arranged. Meals and food were varied and good throughout the trip and we were able to experience different types of South African food. Most Inspirational Moment The tour had lots of highlights - an amazing trip to Schotia Game Reserve where we saw a stunning range of animals, the semi desert area of the Little Karoo around De Rust ( wonderful accommodation and food at House Martin Lodge ) and the Cango Caves, the coastal scenery at Storms River and Hermanus and the Cape Peninsula drive including the penguins, Robben Island, Table Mountain and the Waterfront of Cape Town. Thoughts on Group Leader Our tour driver and guide was Marco Olivier from Mask Expeditions. He made the trip run smoothly down to the very last detail and had a great sense of humour. Most travel days were broken up with adequate rest and scenic stops and even a fun quiz on the long drive. His local knowledge of nature, wildlife and the culture and history of South Africa was good and he was happy to share and discuss it with us. He was helpful with sorting the optional activities and other arrangements especially in Cape Town. Advice for Potential Travellers It is a pity that the Schotia Game Reserve is not an 'included' part of the tour as it is one of the 'must do' activities. Make sure that you have enough Rands at the start of the trip as it is cheaper to pay by cash rather than card. Our time in Mossel Bay was limited and rushed. If possible discuss with the group an early leaving time which would create more time - we left at 9.30am whereas 8.00am would have been better. Minor point - there is no tea / coffee / milk in the accommodation at Storms River. Worth arranging a quick 'shop' stop enroute to buy some. If you have time book an extra couple of nights in Cape Town. We enjoyed a relaxing two days in Cape Town at the end which was a great way to finish the trip.

Enjoyable introduction to the wonderful landscapes and wildlife in this stunning country. Well thought out tour of the Cape, taking in such varied landscapes and experiences. Highlights were the Schotia Game Reserve, the drive through the Little Karoo to the Cango Caves and the trip to the Cape of Good Hope. Touring was on a mini bus, which was spacious enough for our tour group of 13. Most drives were reasonable, but there was one very long day of 7 hours with only a couple of short stops. Accommodation was spacious, clean and with comfortable beds. All of a generally good standard. Most Inspirational Moment Amazing trip to Schotia where we saw a stunning range of animals. Plus the semi desert area of the Little Karoo around De Rust. Thoughts on Group Leader Tallis was a confident & safe driver. He was knowledgeable and kept us well informed of the details of the trip and any changes to the itinerary. He fitted in a couple of extra visits , which improved our experience and were appreciated by all the group (Betty’s Bay and the Kirstenbosch Gardens) There were a number of health challenges with the group that were dealt with in a calm and appropriate manner. Advice for Potential Travellers Be prepared for bad weather. Take refreshments, as stops some days are limited and in some accommodation facilities were also limited. There is one long day travelling, so be aware Suggestions Our accommodation at Storms River Mouth was double booked, so we were changed to an excellent hotel - Tsitsikamma Village Inn. This was only for one night and we moved to the original booking the next night. The weather on that day was absolutely horrendous and the whole site was compromised by the conditions. There was a very limited shop, which was impossible to walk to in the conditions and no refreshment facilities in the room. The restaurant had previously been swept away in a storm and the temporary one was open air only. In view of the well forecast bad weather, we should have been allowed to remain in the changed accommodation for both nights.

jill chaloner - Traveled, December 2023
Cape Town and the garden route Places visited were picturesque enough and accommodation very good throughout. However a major criticism I would make is that only white (Afrikaans) were encountered directly and entire trip dominated by their view of South Africa. Black South Africans were encountered only as fulfilling menial roles (in hotels etc) and their view and perspective was not only missing but it is as if it had been airbrushed away and no mention whatsoever was made of the apartheid issue and long struggle to overcome it. While people do not come on holiday for political education mention of salient facts about a country are essential in the tourist narrative especially if they are recent and ongoing and to give context to what is being experienced. it was only in the Robben Island trip ( only 2 of us did this) that non Afrikaans South Africa was glimpsed and the guides there were excellent presenting things in a straightforward and unemotional way that commanded attention. Most Inspirational Moment Favorite was the safari trip near the elephant reserve where we saw pretty much every animal that could be seen some quite close up (lions elephants and zebras particularly). Thoughts on Group Leader Very pleasant and friendly in personality and very helpful and reliable when there were problems or setbacks. in terms of information about the country I found him extremely limited in scope. Advice for Potential Travellers No. Suggestions Half of the group became ill from early on in the trip one requiring hospitalisation. it was not obvious that it was a single cause as symptoms were variable but in my experience it was very unusual to get that much illness on a short trip to a safe (health wise) non tropical country. I became ill on the last day but that seemed to be just a head cold and without GI symptoms which others had mainly had. Cape Town & the Garden Route Reply from Exodus Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, Jill. Whilst we were pleased to read that you had a great holiday overall, we were very sorry to hear about your concerns. Exodus is an open and diverse B Corp company, and we aim to give our customers a deep understanding of the countries we visit. We have not received similar feedback in the past; therefore, your comment has been taken on board, and has been shared with the relevant managers for careful consideration. What an amazing holiday One of the best holidays I ever had, with a wide range of differing experiences, wildlife, scenery and guest houses. The trip superbly blends the best that South Africa has to offer, from the game reserves with the Big Five, to the beauty of the Garden Route and coastal footpaths, the rugged interior, and then into Cape Town. Very well put together with something for everyone. Most Inspirational Moment The elephant park and game reserve, the cliff paths, then the penguins on Christmas Day, followed by Table Mountain. Thoughts on Group Leader Petro is beyond awesome; a superb guide, great organiser, excellent driver, and the hostess with the mostest. Advice for Potential Travellers Take a proper camera rather than relying on a phone - you'll need it for the long shots, particularly for the animals. Suggestions It's a safe and friendly country.

Beautiful South Africa - Excellent Brilliant introduction to a beautiful country, great break from the English winter.. Most Inspirational Moment So many things, obviously the animals, game tours, Table mountain , the cape peninsula, the little towns on the way, having warm sun and late evenings when its cold and horrible in the uK at the moment. One of my best trips this year Thoughts on Group Leader Pietro Petrorius was the best group leader I have had on the last 6-7 tours I have had this year with Exodus. She singlehandedly dealt with what other tours had two or three people. Her knowledge of her country and every aspect was incredible. nothing fazed her when there were wildfires on the cape peninsula - she found a way to jiggle everything around. When Simons Town was shut with the first she took us to another penguin colony which was in fact much better. When Table Mountain was closed with high winds she rejigged things and got us there first. When that morning it turned out there was a delay in opening she kept her cool and instead of having to wait for four and a half hours she pulled strings and got us up first before the huge queue of people. When Storms Mouth bay was closed we went to Tsitiskamma village which was much better, she organised meals, trips, dealt with travel issues, and on top of that she loaded all the luggage and organised everything perfectly. She is a real asset to you! And all the time she had a good sense of humour and was really friendly and helpful. Advice for Potential Travellers Get a direct flight, I had Exodus organise flights and you gave me flights via Dubai which added probably abother 10-15 hours to the journey. That aspect was horrible. No-one told me about direct flights when I booked, and I booked in in the summer! Not happy about that. It took me 27 hours door to door to get there and about the same to get back as Emirates delayed one flight and rebooked me on an other. Awful experience. Other people on the tour had flown BA direct - only 10 hours - why didn't you tell me about this. I know I had asked to go from BHX but no-one at Exodus pointed out the big difference to the journey time. Not happy bunny on that score.

Aarthi G - Traveled, November 2023
Wonderful South Africa! South Africa is an incredibly beautiful country. This trip takes you along the Southern coast from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, with a couple of inland stays. TIt’s a well-planned itinerary with a lot to see, but not so packed that you feel rushed. The weather in the second half of November was pleasant, sometimes warm, with lots of sunshine. The scenery is stunning, so being in the van is no hardship, especially when broken up by scenic stops. There’s a lot of variety on this trip – nature, landscapes, wildlife, culture, history, wine tasting. There’s also a good choice of activities, so everyone can find something to suit their tastes, from walking/hiking to zip-lining to whale watching and para-gliding. The food is fresh and excellent – and inexpensive. We saw so much wildlife, both at Addo Elephant Park and Scotia safaris – elephants, rhinos, lions, hippos, giraffe, water buffalo, all sorts of ruminants. The bird life is also amazing, not to mention the cetaceans! Tsitsikamma National Park is a special place – remote and beautiful. The drive to the Meiringspoort waterfall is stunning – almost otherworldly in its beauty. The vibrant colours of the Knysna heads stay with you. Cape Town is a vibrant city with a lot to see and do, set against the majestic backdrop of Table Mountain. Overall, this is a trip that is well worth doing. It leaves you wanting more. A huge thanks to our tour guide, Marco Olivier, who went out of his way to accommodate us and make the trip a special one! Most Inspirational Moment I’m not sure I could choose only one moment. There were so many that were uplifting! Every day that I stood (or sat) on the shore – whether in Port Elizabeth, Tsitsikamma or Hermanus – I spotted dolphins and whales out on the water, even down to seeing some dolphins wave-surfing when the tide was high. It was like being in a nature documentary! In Hermanus, we were fortunate to see Southern Right Whales – a mother and calf – come in really close to shore. We also got a much closer look during a whale watching trip, despite it being close to the end of the season. Thoughts on Group Leader Our tour driver and guide was Marco Olivier from Mask Expeditions, and he was amazing! He made the trip run smoothly down to the very last detail, all with a great sense of humour. He ensured that we were comfortable, and went the extra mile to help with details like optional activities and other arrangements. Travel days were broken up with adequate rest and scenic stops, and even a fun quiz. His knowledge of nature, wildlife, culture and history is impressive, and he happily shared it with us. We absolutely peppered him with questions – and he answered them all. We could not have asked for a better guide. It felt like travelling with a friend! Advice for Potential Travellers Take high-factor sunscreen and a hat. A pair of binoculars would also very handy. The water is mostly safe to drink, but Marco also had an ample supply to refill water bottles if needed. Internet and phone connectivity was poor for parts of the trip. It’s a great way to switch off! Laundry facilities are available at De Rust. If you're interested in whale watching (and who isn't?), make sure that you visit during the season. We were in Hermanus at the end of November, and were fortunate enough to see Southern Right whale mother and calf, but were informed by the guides that these were the stragglers and that the majority of the whales had already returned to Antarctica.

Amazing Adventure down the Garden Route full of Variety! This itinerary offers something for everyone! From Safaris to National Parks to Whale Watching, City tours and Wine Tasting, every day offers a new adventure and something exciting to look forward to. The pace doesn’t feel to rushed with no long drives and even the slightly longer ones broken up with coffee stops and viewpoints. The East Head Viewpont in Kynesa being a particular highlight of mine! You meet some lovely locals including the charming owners full of stories at St Martin’s guesthouse and whale watching off the shore line in Hermanus was truly one of the most amazing sites seeing so many whales congregated in the same place breaching and teaching their young to strengthen their fins before heading across to Antarctica to feed. I choose to travel in South Africa’s Spring time because I really wanted to see the Whales migrating in Hermanus, little did I realise but it’s also an excellent time to visit because all the flowers are in bloom so the drives were really stunning, our guide even mentioned that he hadn’t seen the landscapes so green. If you’re looking for a leisurely paced trip with a passion for wildlife, landscapes, food and wine then this ones a winner! Most Inspirational Moment For me the most inspirational moment was watching the whales in Hermanus, I did a coastal path walk and a whale watching trip and both were equally amazing. The backdrop of Hermanus and the dramatic rugged coastline was such a lovely setting, there was even a local band playing instruments in the square so the whole town had a exciting buzz and energy to it. The whales get so close to the shore and captivated everyone every time one popped up to breath. Thoughts on Group Leader Our group leader was Tallis and he was excellent! He was so full of knowledge and has been leading tours for over 20 years so had a great understanding and knowledge of the local wildlife and culture in South Africa. I had an issue with my bag and Tallis was super proactive in taking me to a local mall to make sure I had some essentials to last me a few days. He was also relentless with contacting the airport staff and airline to ensure I was reuinted with my bag before to long, it was comforting to be that far away from home and have someone who truly cared and went out of his way to make sure I was informed and comfortable. Tallis mentioned at the end that he really enjoys when guests ask him questions so don't be shy and ask as he pretty much has all the answers! Advice for Potential Travellers If travelling between August - November make sure you check the weather forecast when your packing! For the first half of the trip we were in coats and winter hats and by the second half shorts, sandles and summer clothes wearing sun cream. We experienced all climates throughout the trip so pack for all weathers. I would also suggest a pair of binoculars because there are so many wildlife spotting opportunities!

Fantastic Varied Trip with an Amazing Group This was a great trip taking in the best of the Garden Route and all it has to offer. It is a very varied trip, with a fabulous mixture of wildlife, scenery, culture, wine and outdoor activities (hiking, zip-lining, swimming in waterfalls etc). Most Inspirational Moment The breadth of experience on this trip is what sets it apart. The variety of activities is excellent, from safari drives in Addo and Schotia, to coastal walks and zip lining in Tsitsikamma, to whale watching and wine tasting near Hermanus, and finally to penguins and history in Cape Town. It is impossible to pick just one moment, as we had such an amazing time throughout the trip. Thoughts on Group Leader Tallis was an absolutely amazing guide, very knowledgeable and always in good humour. He went out of his way to organise any and all optional trips for the group, including taking half our group to a bonus wine tasting venue just outside of Hermanus which was a fabulous way to spend a couple of hours in the afternoon after whale watching. He dealt amazingly with the issues we encountered following the storms, either by re-routing our drives where the roads had been washed away or organising alternative restaurants, activities etc without us ever feeling like we were missing out. I missed the first night of the trip in Port Elizabeth due to a combination of British Airways cancelling my international flight and then the huge storm in PE preventing my plane from landing. Tallis managed to contact me when I had landed back at Joburg (after 8 hours and 4 failed attempts to land in PE) and organised to pick me up at at PE airport first thing to following morning on the group's way out of town, so I amazingly did not miss any of the actual trip, for which I am incredibly grateful. He also dealt with two lost baggage issues, arranging for them to be reunited with their owners at two points during the tour. Overall, I could not have asked for a better trip leader. Advice for Potential Travellers As others have mentioned, you must pick up any checked baggage in Joburg and re-check it in for the onwards flight to Port Elizabeth. Even better, travel with hand luggage only if possible - there are places on the trip that do laundry for a very reasonable fee. Do the optional extra Schotia safari drive. This small reserve is excellently run and we saw 4 of the Big 5 there (no leopard). Our experience was that Schotia was significantly better in terms of safari drive when compared to Addo. Go prepared for the unexpected and try to embrace it. We had the fall-out from the huge storms in a few places (no power in Tsitsikamma, no water in Hermanus, certain roads detoured) but none of these things had any real impact on the overall enjoyment of the tour and both Tallis and the local hotels did their best to help wherever they could. Accept that these things can happen and are out of any person's control and you will have a fabulous trip with a few bonus stories to tell. Suggestions Personally, I loved the 'forest huts' in Tsitsikamma but I know a few people preferred the less 'basic' accommodation. For me, the scenery - you are right on the sea front with crashing waves and endless viewpoints - more than made up for the more rustic accommodation.

A Most Varied and Inspiring Adventure Like many other previous reviews have already stated, this trip covered so many different experiences-lots of wildlife from elephants, big cats, whales, many antelope species, birds, reptiles and insects. Also stunning scenery including mountains, fynbos vegetation,semi-desert and the wild cape coast as well as the interesting and varied city life of Cape Town itself. Most Inspirational Moment There were so many inspirational moments making it difficult to highlight just one. The optional Schotia Game Drive, the walks at the Tsitsikama National park and others, visiting Robben Island and an optional visit to the Langa township which we were able to do as we stayed on in Cape Town for an extra 2 nights, Also being able to get to the top of Table Mountain on the only day that it was clear enough to do so. Thoughts on Group Leader Tallis was superb in every way. His organisation and knowledge of all things South African and his sharp sense of humour made the trip full of so many different experiences. We have been on many Exodus trips and he is certainly one of the best leaders we have had. Advice for Potential Travellers A highly recommended trip, especially if it is a first time visit to South Africa. I would certainly recommend trying to do a township tour when in Cape Town as it gives a wider experience of the lives of people in and around the city. The City Lodge Hotel booked our trip for us which was a morning tour. Suggestions We had superb weather at Tsitsikama National Park but a couple of days later we heard and saw on video that a storm with pounding waves had caused considerable damage to the restaurant and other structures at the Storms River Rest Camp. Hopefully groups following us were not too badly inconvenienced. Also, storms at Hermanus meant all whale watching boat trips were cancelled. We did, however manage to see whales from the shoreline.

Wonderful variety This was a trip selected for its variety and travel in South African Spring – from whale watching to wine tasting , underground with cave tour to the heights of zip lining – alongside superb locations and great food – and as it’s outside of the main season we had beaches and locations to ourselves the majority of the time Most Inspirational Moment Whale watching from the shore in Hermanus was incredible and staying in a log cabin so close to the edge of the thunderous ocean were two of many highlights … and of course your safari on the plains of Addo and Scotia were perfect in every way . Thoughts on Group Leader We struck gold with Andrew, he was the best type of guide - knowledgeable , supportive and good fun - took all the stress out of travel and created a great atmosphere for everyone . Advice for Potential Travellers Remember the season - if you travel in September it’s still early spring so take warm clothes and waterproofs . Suggestions Be aware of ensuring you pick your luggage up at J’burg before you transfer to the Port Elizabeth flight( Exodus include this in your trip notes ) The airport is small but it can be slightly confusing especially if you are in a hurry. So , if you have a few rand for a tip at the beginning , it’s worth finding a porter to guide you to the domestic check in desks . Credit card payments were easy to make throughout .

Amazing holiday This was an amazing trip, with beautiful scenery, fabulous food and wine, wildlife, and some great places to stay. Would highly recommend it. Most Inspirational Moment I love elephants, so seeing them up close in Addo was fantastic. Along with the other wildlife there like zebras and even the dung beetles! The game dive in Schotia was also fab, we saw lion cubs feasting on a recent kill, and a very grumpy-looking buffalo. We watched the sunset from the top of Table Mountain. And visiting Robben Island was so interesting and a moving experience. Oh and the cute penguins at Boulder Beach. Dancing at Marco's African experience restaurant on the last night in Cape Town. Thoughts on Group Leader Petro was fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable, excellent driver! She really looked after us. Our group only had four guests in it which meant we had much more of a personalised and flexible experience. Advice for Potential Travellers Definitely go for it. I went in late March/early April and the weather was perfect, although a bit breezy in Tsitsikamma. Take a torch for walking back at night there, and also for the times when the electricity goes off for a while (load shedding).

Great Trip Various scenery and a mix of South Africa, from wildlife to great food (& wine), amazing scenery and relaxed pace Most Inspirational Moment I loved Storms River - the energy and scenery produced by the sea - I could watch it all day! Thoughts on Group Leader Organised, mixed well, ensured smooth running and went out of his way to fit in all our additional activities Advice for Potential Travellers Go and enjoy it

Beautiful country, packed itinerary, top guide It is difficult to know where to start as we went from one amazing day to the next. From the breathtaking views of wildlife at Addo Elephant Park and “must do” Schotia safari experience, to thunderous oceans and refreshing mountain waterfall swims. Petro the guide was so knowledgeable and did not gild the lilly with her insight into the political and economic challenges which are the backdrop to this beautiful country. Most Inspirational Moment Schotia Safari - optional extra is a must do. Mountain waterfall swim Thoughts on Group Leader Petro was the best guide I have experienced on an Exodus holiday, which is saying a lot! She dealt with the inevitable challenges (flat tyre!) professionally and without fuss. Advice for Potential Travellers Sign up for this trip and go for the optional Schotia Safari

The title says it all We arrived in Port Elizabeth and meet our tour leader., Andrew Lindsay. He was excellent, made everyone feel welcome and gave us a brief overview of our trip. During the next 11 days we had a great adventure. Starting with Addo Elephant park, followed by a superb Safari organised by Andrew. Everything during the trip was very well organised, Hermanus, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Table Mountain, Robben Island, staying at some lovely places and having the knowledge of a South African guide was incredible. If I have any criticism, is that some of the accommodation was probably not 3/4 star as suggested. However, due to the enthusiasm and positivity of Andrew the holiday was a wonderful experience of South Africa’s Garden Route. Most Inspirational Moment The safari was probably my most inspirational moment of the trip. Thoughts on Group Leader Andrew Lindsay was excellent, very knowledgable, patient, organised and enthusiastic. Advice for Potential Travellers Pack light, take binoculars, take every opportunity available. Suggestions Although we were a little apprehensive of going on a tour with other people. It was a good experience, we meet and made some lovely friends, everything was well organised and we felt very relaxed.

Amazing places but too many packed in for me Scotia, Tsitsikamma, Hermanus, Ngysna, Table mountain and sailing in the bay at Cape Town were all great. There were lots of other places we visited that were still interesting but I would have preferred to have visited fewer places but be able to stay in them for longer. I was a first time solo traveller though so maybe others would have different expectations. Most Inspirational Moment Waking up in Tsitsikamma. Thoughts on Group Leader Petro was amazing, so much energy and enthusiasm. Advice for Potential Travellers Pack lighter than I did, cheap but excellent laundry facilities are provided at De Rust.

Cape Town & the Garden Route I see Caroline & Chris have already completed a review which has saved me writing anything as I whole heartedly agree with what they have submitted! This was my 6th trip with Exodus and it rated favourably with all the others. I think you can rely on consistency with Exodus. If you don’t want to have to think about what you are going to do the next day or where you are going to eat or even what you need to wear on your feet then choose Exodus! Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent - felt safe with all the hours of driving he had to do. He planned, booked and took us to our excellent good value meals. Advice for Potential Travellers Be prepared to eat & drink lots and put on weight.
