Today is a free day in Split. At the heart of its atmospheric Old Town is a fascinating city-within-a-city – the remains of a 3rd-century palace built for Roman Emperor Diocletian. These ancient walls now house a vibrant mix of shops, cafes, restaurants and houses. Maybe step back in time as you stroll the sprawling maze of passageways and courtyards – you’ll also find a 16th-century synagogue and a courtyard often filled with music. This afternoon, why not sample Croatia’s fine coffee culture with a frothy kava from a cafe on the Riva waterfront promenade or climb the Cathedral of Saint Domnius for panoramic views over the city. Walk through the wooded hills, surrounding turquoise lakes and waterfalls and be sure to look for local wildlife living in the primeval forest vegetation of beech trees, fir spruce and white pine. Later, drive to Croatia's capital of Zagreb, where you’ll stay tonight.

Stop by a bakery for a taste of cevapcici (grilled minced meat) – a traditional market snack. This was a brilliant trip to a beautiful part of the world. The highlight for me was Lake Bled in Slovenia - absolutely stunning. As Slovenia was high on my wish list, it would be nice if Intrepid could find a way for the group to leave earlier in the morning on the travel day from Zagreb to Ljubljana, even if that meant taking a bus not a train. While Lucija helped us organise our time in the afternoon in Ljubljana and our day at Lake Bled, I’d already done everything I wanted to in Zagreb and would have liked more time in Ljubljana. Every other part of the itinerary was great. Although wet on the day we went, Plitvice Lakes were beautiful. What made this trip even better was having the lovely Lucija as our leader! Definitely recommend this trip.

I booked this trip last minute without expectations and I was nervous about accommodations. I ended up being very happy and satisfied. With exception of one accommodation being externally small space, everything else was great.

This trip was the perfect 'Basics' dive into the Balkan region. It was the perfect taste of Aegean Sea experience as well as the beautiful interior mountain towns you see in central Europe. There weren't alot of included activities which was expected and it allowed us to have tons of free time to do what we wanted. Highly recommended if you want to do more of your own exploring.

This trip was really made special by our wonderful tour leader, Dijana, who arranged my most memorable birthday party to date! Overall this is a great itinerary, just consider adding a day before and after for enough time in Dubrovnik and Venice. Ljubljana and Bled were highlights along with the Plitvice Lakes. Hotels were basic but clean and local transport always comes with challenges like the air con not working - go with the flow and be ready for things beyond your control and you will be happy!

An excellent trip full of interesting cities to explore and stunning scenery. There was plenty of free time which allowed us to explore on our own. The accommodation was basic but clean and served its purpose. Our tour guide was excellent and full of local knowledge to allow us to make the most of our time in each place. I would recommend staying an additional day in Dubrovnik and Venice to see more of what these places have to offer.
