Trip For You
This trip is graded Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings, visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip, please contact us. Hikes: This is a mountainous area, so all trails have plenty of ascents and descents. There are very few level paths and the maximum height gain and loss is 2,990ft (911m). We usually walk between 3hr 45min and six hours per day. Terrain: Corsica has a network of long-established trails and walking paths, most well maintained and way marked. Even so, paths are rocky and walking boots with good ankle support and tread are essential.
Eating Drinking
The trip includes all breakfasts, five picnic lunches and six evening meals. Evening meals are taken at a restaurant near the hotel, Café de France, and are arranged as a menu for the whole group. The evening meal on your free day is not included, allowing you to try the local restaurants. Typical meals are: Breakfast: Orange juice, croissant, fresh French bread, coffee/tea, cereals, eggs, cheese and cold cuts.Lunch: Picnics made of a mixed salad (eg pasta and tuna, potato and meat, lentils and sausage), bread and cheese, and fruit. We encourage you to bring your own recyclable container.Evening meals: A first course of soup or a starter (often salad or charcuterie); a main course usually with meat, sometimes fish; and a dessert. Corsica is famous for charcuteries and brocciu cheese, fresh local herbs, gamey meats and fish, which can feature in the evening meals. The evening meal does not include drinks. Vegetarians can be catered for, but the options are more limited, with the evening meal normally pasta or omelette-based.
Transportation
Transfers are in a private vehicle, plus we take the mountain train on some days.

Weather Information
The best weather for walking in Corsica comes in late spring/early summer, late summer and early autumn. Average daily temperatures in May and June range from 21C to 28C (70F to 82F) and in September from 20C to 26C (68F to 79F). The days are usually clear and fresh, avoiding the sultry humidity of midsummer. The average summer temperature at sea level is 26C (79F) and slightly lower in Corte and in the interior mountains. Sunshine can substantially change the heat perception. As with all mountainous regions, there is always the possibility of rain, and it can be very heavy when it comes. Therefore, it is necessary to have a fleece and good quality waterproofs at the ready. Please note, mountains can always make their own weather and, as a result, we may occasionally be forced to amend sections of the itinerary. For this reason, you need everything from swimwear and sunscreen to a warm layer and good quality waterproofs.
Spending Money
Allow about €50 for meals not included. In addition, you need about €5-€8 per day for drinks and snacks. About €100 to €150 should be sufficient to cover the above, plus souvenirs, optional excursions/entry fees during your free day, depending on what you buy or do. Local taxes: French hotels must apply a taxe de sejour to all overnight guests. This fee varies depending on the hotel category, the season and number of days of stay. It is usually between €0.50 and €1.50 per person per night. For this trip, we recommend allowing €1 per night. This is payable directly to the hotel. Optional excursions Corte — Corse Museum in Corte entrance: €5.50 Bastia — Bastia Museum: €5 Ajaccio — Musée Fesch: €10 Musée National de la Maison Bonaparte: €7
Tipping
Although optional, a tip for the tour leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated. The sum you choose to give is entirely personal, but as a reasonable starting point, we suggest a contribution from €15 to €20 per person for the tour leader.

Itinerary

1
Day 1: Start Corte

We start at Hotel de la Paix in Corte. If you have time before the welcome meeting this evening, wander around the picturesque town, the one-time capital of the island.

2
Day 2: Walk up to Punta di u Corbu in the Restonica Gorges, back down through pine forests

Start the week with an exploration of the Restonica Gorges. From downtown Corte, we hike towards the Chapel of Saint-Antoine. The trail gradually climbs up to Punta di u Corbu, offering superb panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. At the top of a small pass, we can enjoy superb views, before descending through a pine forest towards the Restonica River. The descent continues along the road, bordered by the crystal-clear waters of the river, back to the hotel.

3
Day 3: Train to Vivario; walk to Tattone and the Vecchio River; ascend to Vizzavona; train to Corte

After a 35-minute train journey to Vivario, we begin our walk across a ridge to the ruins of a French fort with fine views of Monte d’Oro to the west and the Tavignano Valley to the east. We then descend through a forest to Camping Savaggio, and to the village of Tattone. From there, a short, steep descent takes us to the Vecchio River, where it may be possible to swim in one of the many beautiful rock pools. Our hike then takes us along a rocky path up the river valley to Abri Southwell – site of one of the earliest known settlements in Corsica. We cross the river and make the short ascent through the forest to Vizzavona, returning by train (50 minutes) to Corte.

4
Day 4: Walk along the Tavignano Gorge; return to Corte

From our hotel, we walk up the Tavignano Gorge along part of the Mare a Mare (Sea to Sea), a long-distance hiking trail traversing the island from east to west. We stop for lunch next to beautiful rock pools where, weather permitting, we can swim. Return along the valley to Corte, with a little time to explore. Options include visiting the citadel, a fortified château founded on a rocky peak in 1419. To go inside, you need to purchase a ticket to the Musée de la Corse, an anthropological museum in the barracks below. Alternatively, explore the historic centre, stopping at one of the many cafes, gelaterias and restaurants, or swim in the Tavignano River.

5
Day 5: Free day for an optional trip to Napoleon’s Ajaccio or to explore Bastia

There are various options for your free day. Relax around the hotel and Corte, travel across the island, or visit the coast. Ajaccio, Napoleon’s birthplace, has beaches, shops and restaurants. Explore the Musée Fesch (home to an outstanding collection of Italian paintings) or take a bus ride along the coast. You can also visit the coastal town of Bastia to explore the citadel and emblematic old port.

6
Day 6: Train to Vizzavona from where we walk along the GR20 to Bocca Palmente

From Corte, a 50-minute train journey takes us to Vizzavona, where we begin our walk along the GR20 to Bocca Palmente. This route includes sections through pine and beech forest and spectacular views out to Monte d’Oro and the east coast. There may be the opportunity for an optional extension to the clear water of the Cascades des Anglais rock pools.

7
Day 7: Short public shuttle transfer; walk to the Cappellaccia Shepherd’s Huts and Plateau d’Alzu

After a short transfer by public shuttle to the start of the trail, we start our final hike of the trip, one still used by shepherds. The path climbs up through pine forest on regular switchbacks to reach the source of the Funtana Bianca at the bottom of the path. The path then leaves the forest and climbs to the Cappellaccia Shepherd’s Huts. After a 20-minute slightly downhill traverse, we reach the scenic Plateau d'Alzu and the Maison Forestière (Forester’s Lodge), where we might have a chance to try Corsican cheese. We then take the shuttle back to Corte and walk back to our hotel.

8
Day 8: End Corte

The adventure ends after breakfast. Speak to your sales representative if you’d like to extend your stay or begin your return journey home.

A wonderful trip in beautiful landscapes A great week in a beautiful place with excellent food, a charming hotel and a fun leader. All you could ask for… Most Inspirational Moment Bathing in the beautiful clear blue waters of the rivers to relieve the heat of the day...so - very luckily - this moment happened every day we walked. Thoughts on Group Leader He ( Alejandro) was excellent - capable and informed and fun. Sensible (safe) without being patrician. He was perfect for the job. Advice for Potential Travellers Go on this holiday!! And take good walking boots. Suggestions The hotel was excellent. Very simple rooms but a lovely place with truly excellent food and the most charming owner-manager you can imagine (Paul). He really contributed to the holiday. Overall, it was very good value. Btw - I took this holiday in July 2022.

Highly recommended After waiting 2 years it was good to eventually be able to go on this trip. The organisation was perfect, and although only 2* the stay was in a traditional family hotel with friendly staff, a clean and comfortable room, and a good shower to end the day with. The views from my room were spectacular, and the evening meals were superb. All the walks were of the standard I expected, and all in beautiful surroundings. It was interesting to take the local train to the start point of each walk on most days. Thoughts on Group Leader Our leader was excellent. He was so enthusiastic, explained clearly what each day's walk would entail, and ensured the group walked at a pace suitable for all, with plenty of water stops (needed in the heat). Advice for Potential Travellers A bit of advance research may assist you in deciding what to do on the free day, whether to go to Ajaccio or Corte, or indeed do another walk. I would recommend taking most money in cash - the hotel only took cash for settling the drinks bill, cash was needed for tips (hotel and leader), and often restaurants and cafes seemed to prefer cash (even in Ajaccio) although the train and shops were OK with card. The problem is that the only ATMs are in Corte or Ajaccio if you run short! I think there should be better advice about the airport transfers. We changed flights at Nice on the outward and Marseilles on the return. Both airports were very difficult and confusing as to how to changes terminals (even though close together in both cases). Many of us found it tricky, so I don't think it was just me!

Superb Holiday It’s great when all the elements for a superb holiday come together:- hotel, food, walks, scenery, weather, the other walkers, and the guides – a wonderful holiday in a lovely location. Most Inspirational Moment Walking up through pine and beech forest on the GR20 to the Bocca Palmente pass. And then, after the walk, sitting in a small bar by the Vizzavona train station, with a cold drink whilst listening to some calming music and chatting to the other walkers. Thoughts on Group Leader Jenny had done a great amount of research of the walks and the area before we arrived, and led us at a kind pace through lovey walks. She had a lovely personality and ensured everyone enjoyed the whole trip (thanks!). Alex also accompanied us and was a great enthusiastic companion too. Advice for Potential Travellers It can be very hot on Corsica so choose the time of year that you feel is best for you. Suggestions On our “day off” we all had dinner in the local restaurant - about 20 euros each and a lovely evening.

A wonderful adventure The week was full of outstanding beauty, different terrains, rock pools to swim in, bird life and flowers Most Inspirational Moment No particular moment...it was all inspirational Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent! I’ve been on many Exodus trips...he was the best yet! Advice for Potential Travellers Walking poles are very useful. Some of the walking is on very rocky terrain and descending can be hard...useful to have poles to steady oneself. Take your swimwear! The rock pools are lovely. Suggestions I particularly liked this holiday as we stayed in the same hotel all week. The village it was situated in was very welcoming. There was a small museum which is really worth visiting! A small bar, where the locals meet, play chess eat ice cream and drink! I loved the hotel! Basic facilities but what more do you need!

The walks were as described and the scenery was amazing. The group were fantastic, very supportive and great fun. Highly recommended. Most Inspirational Moment The amazing views and swimming in Rock Pools. Seeing a golden eagle was pretty special too!! Thoughts on Group Leader Amazing Advice for Potential Travellers Go for it. There's lots of support. The advice given by exodus is very accurate.

What a Fantastic Island, what Fantastic People Corsica has all that you could want for adventurers on a Mediterranean island. Mountains, forests, wildlife, plants and a way of life adapted to the environment. Most Inspirational Moment Scrambling up the side of a mountain on a rugged path with like-minded people who quickly became friends. All this followed by a cooling dip in crystal clear pools in a mountain stream under a hot sun. Thoughts on Group Leader Sebastien, our group leader made it all possible with his understanding of the logistics but even more so with his passion for and knowledge of this incredible island. Sebastien was able to keep us informed and amused in an environment that created trust and ensured, above all else, safety. From history to language to culture to flora and fauna we had all the information we needed to make this an exceptional week but it was down to Sebastien to make sure that all of the elements worked together. Advice for Potential Travellers Corsica is great and as an Italian speaker I was able to speak to local people, me in Italian and they in Corsican. Of course they also speak French and many English but they do like people to also speak their own, vibrant language. If you like butterflies, you won't be disappointed - the two tailed pasha was a highlight. The walking is not too hard although some parts are tougher than others; a section of the GR20 allows you to see the potential of this famous route. Suggestions Sardinia and Corsica share many similarities but Corsica is more mountainous. Like other holiday destinations July and August are busier and hotter so June and September seem ideal times to visit.

A great trip First Exodus holiday and a great experience. Most Inspirational Moment Last two more challenging walks Thoughts on Group Leader Really excellent. Great local knowledge of flora and fauna, landscape and history. Relaxed and humorous approach whilst taking very good care of us. Advice for Potential Travellers First couple of walks are not very long or challenging, might not suit everyone.

Mountains and Villages of Corsica An excellent walking holiday. Recommended. Very good hotel. Interesting and unspoiled countryside. Travel by train to walks a very good part of the holiday. Most Inspirational Moment Difficult to say as the trip was inspiring in so many ways. Thoughts on Group Leader Did a very good job. To be specific: Had well thought out "drop off' points on each walk to allow those tired etc to still have a fulfilling day. Well thought out material support such as spare walking poles, guidance on use, advice and material to help with any blisters. Very good local knowledge, well presented. Advice for Potential Travellers Check the trip notes, think about the level, accept and enjoy the differences of a foreign country.

A weeks walking in Corsica A pleasant weeks walking on a mixture of forest and more open trails. Hotel is pleasant. The evening meals were better than the very bread heavy breakfasts and pack lunches. Most Inspirational Moment The walk up to the Bocca Palmente coll and the Anglais Falls on day 6. Thoughts on Group Leader Knows his stuff. Set the right balance between knowing were everyone was and letting people go at their own pace. Advice for Potential Travellers Hotel does not have any air conditioning or insect screens, so bring a plug-in mosquito coil. Be prepared for some fairly steep and loose rocky trails on some days as per the trip notes. I was very glad I had my walking poles with me for the descents. Suggestions It would have been nice to spend more time above the tree line, but that would have significantly increased the amount of ascent and thus the trip grading.

A great weeks walking The guide , the party and the walking was excellent. Very well pitched as a level 3. The hotel structure was fine but the food was the low point of the holiday. There was not even a bar in the hotel. Breakfast for all 7 days was a hard boiled egg, a slice of formed ham, a croissant and a decent supply of baguette…every day Most Inspirational Moment the higher walks Thoughts on Group Leader excellent

Great walking in spectacular Corsica Corsica was beautiful in the late summer sunshine. The hiking was as described in the trip notes and I felt appropriately prepared for the level of walking. Good central base and excellent use of the trains to allow a varied set of walks. The last two walks were outstanding, though there wasn’t a day I didn’t enjoy. Hotel was basic but adequate with welcoming hosts. I would definitely do a similar trip again. Most Inspirational Moment Some of the views were remarkable and cooling down in the mountain streams. Thoughts on Group Leader Sebastian was outstanding. Obviously enjoyed and took great pride in sharing his love and knowledge of Corsica. Went beyond his responsibilities and was a real asset to the trip- Exodus you should use him again!! Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you carry enough water and if you do need extra supplies bring them with you- no shop in village. The level descriptions are accurate- so do some training to get to the suggested levels. ENJOY!

Corsica is the perfect hiking and holiday destination Corsica is an absolute gem. The trip was exactly as described, and it just makes me want to go back! Most Inspirational Moment Having been to Corsica before, I chose the trip as a way of introducing my son to hiking holidays and as a way of sharing one of my very favourite places. He loved it! Thoughts on Group Leader Martin is great. Relaxed and somewhat understated. Just right. Advice for Potential Travellers Read the trip notes! The notes for this trip are really very good. When it says you should have a reasonable level of fitness and that the paths can be steep and rocky, it means exactly that. It is at the challenging-end of a “moderate” trip.

Invigorating walks in unspoilt hills & mountains of the beautiful island of Corsica Everything came together for this trip – Martin, our excellent leader, a group which gelled, wonderful scenery & walks that were just a bit of a challenge for someone used to walking in the Pennines! If the weather was hot, there was the option of a cooling dip in a mountain stream at the end of most walks. The free day allowed everyone to choose either to visit Ajaccio by train or just have a relaxing day in Bocognano. The hotel Beausejour was basic but provided everything needed after a day of trekking in the hills! Recommended! Most Inspirational Moment Difficult to say as there were so many highlights. A sense of achievement after climbing the higher trails, being rewarded with outstanding panoramic views. Loved swimming in the mountain streams at the end to cool off! Thoughts on Group Leader Martin was an experienced leader with detailed knowledge of the trip & the terrain through which we walked & he was calm & patient with everyone, with lots of ideas for those taking a day off fdrom walking or heading off on a trip on the free day. Advice for Potential Travellers Walking poles really do help as some ascents & descents are steep. Large water bottles needed & swimming gear is a must if you want to go for a cooling dip after a long day of hiking!! Suggestions Enjoy Corsica - it's beautiful!

Corsica hiking My wife and I had an outstanding time on our hiking trip in Corsica. it was great fun getting on the train in the mornings and off to hike a different area of the island. Our guide Sabastian did an outstanding job of taking care of us and guiding us through his part of France. He took great pride in showing us the countryside and informing us of the local history. We also were impressed with his knowledge of the birds and vegetation of the area. The kikes were challenging and provided a great perspective of the terrain of the island. Most Inspirational Moment Getting to see the vast terrain of the island. Thoughts on Group Leader I was extremely impressed with Sebastian, his knowledge of the area was impressive. Having a local guide really added to our experience. His ability to meet the needs of a wide group of folks surpassed my expectations. Advice for Potential Travellers Com prepared for some great hikes! Suggestions The accommodation was adequate and the meals were great, it would be nice if there was a little more variety for the lunches.

Terrific Hiking Trip Our guide Sebastian was outstanding. He was extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of Corsica as well as the history of the island. He has a great sense of humor which makes any trip more fun. The train is super convenient for the trip. Easy walk from the hotel and usually a short train trip to another village and then a hike. Excellent variety of terrain and views. Usually around 5 hours on the trail each day. Good hiking boots and poles were much appreciated. The accommodations and food are adequate and serve the purpose well. Most Inspirational Moment The hike on the last day is a very challenging climb where you are rewarded with stunning views at every turn. Thoughts on Group Leader Outstanding. Advice for Potential Travellers Don't let the moderate accommodations steer you away from choosing the trip. The entire trip is brilliant from start to finish.

SUSAN WILLIAMS   -  Traveled, July 2018

beautiful scenery and varied walks First time in Corsica and was surprised by its beauty and the variety of walks along wooded valleys and mountain climbs in starker scenery above the tree line – not just the GR20. Enjoyed travelling on the scenic railway and we had a great group and guide. Modest accommodation more than made up for by the views from the hotel, friendly owner and the hearty food. Would recommend going in June when its still very green and lots of wild flowers on display. Most Inspirational Moment Finishing the final walk which had some wonderful views at the summit, for the heavens to open 20 minutes from the hotel with our first rain all week and a dramatic thunder storm to completely soak us and turn the roads to rivers and remind us how quickly things can change in the mountains and the power of nature Thoughts on Group Leader It was his first trip as lone guide for Exodus and he proved to be responsive to the group offering different alternatives, great company and very adaptable. Also brought his extensive medical knowledge, which always helps! Advice for Potential Travellers Apart from the rest day you are very much away from towns and shops so make sure you have Euros in cash, bring any medication, toiletries etc... you think you will need and if you like to have cereal for breakfast bring your own! (I preferred the wonderful croissants!)

Corsica Hiking Well balanced group and trip in good location for trains to hiking trails. The first days route was poor especially in comparison to the rest of the days. Most Inspirational Moment I do a lot of hiking in different countries so it is difficult to say there was an inspirational moment. However, this was my first group hiking trip with a leader and I would do it again. Thoughts on Group Leader Very good, Tom was more like a group member. He was in control in a relaxed way, explained the route and we were able to walk alone or with other group members.

Wonderful walks from the railway A varied set of walks in a beautiful green island. Woods, rivers, waterfalls among the mountains. The walks weren’t crowded and we were mostly the only walkers on the trail. Most Inspirational Moment Swimming in the mountain rivers to cool down. Thoughts on Group Leader Tom was a first time guide and he led us in a relaxed, friendly manner. He was always keen to hear our opinions about the routes we took. Advice for Potential Travellers Take a travel kettle to make tea and coffee. The lunch baguette is enormous and full of as many fillings as you could want. You can also take 2 pieces of fruit. Dinner was always plentiful and tasty. Try to speak a bit of French - it is always appreciated.

Mountains and villages of corsica Excellent trip. Day 1 walk was fairly ordinary, while days 2, 5 and 6 were all really fantastic. Extra special thanks to the Exodus team for making this trip happen, when the French ATC strike occurred. Most Inspirational Moment Col de Palmente walk was rather special. Thoughts on Group Leader Tom Humphries is a great leader, very experienced in dealing with a group. Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you book your flights through Exodus. If you don't and anything goes wrong, you need to sort it out yourself.

A walk on the wild side. This is a wonderful trip to gladden the heart of anyone who enjoys walking in fabulous rugged mountains, alonside (and over) mountain streams and through meadows and forests. For someone like myself who is a rabid plantaholic it brings the added delight of myriad wild flowers including some very beautiful orchids. The walks were all great come rain or shine and included visiting picturesque villages and learning a smattering of history with forts and menhir. There is also a chance to visit the coast which happily has not had rampant development. The hotel is situated close to the village rail station which was ideal for hopping on to get to the start of the walks. I can reccommend aiding the local economy by visiting the bakery and at the end of a walk relaxing in a local bar, maybe with a beer or pastisse, although not compulsory it was a great way to end a great day of walking. Most Inspirational Moment I loved the scenery and the peaceful walks not often meeting other people and of course the swathes of colour of the wild flowers. Thoughts on Group Leader Martin is a good leader who obviously enjoys his work and has a great sense of humour which all adds to the pleasure of the holiday, he is also caring of all the group. Advice for Potential Travellers Ensue you have plenty of energy, good footwear, rain wether gear and adequate water bottles. Do not expect much bird life.

Mountains and Villages of Corsica TEB I was very much looking forward to this holiday and it did not disappoint. You see mountains in every direction and get to ride on a train to get to and from some of the walks. The hotel is charming…..as is Paul the owner. Everyone smiles and you feel very welcome. It is basic…..but this is part of the charm. The showers may be small but there is plenty of hot water all the time. Beds are comfy and everywhere is wonderfully clean. Mostly the food tastes delicious and is well presented and served by Paul himself. Most Inspirational Moment The magic of the mountains and the satisfaction of walking up them. Fresh water from the mountain springs and cold plunges into them on hot days !!! Thoughts on Group Leader Martin is a little cutie.....ha ha!!!! Kind, gentle and caring. Hope to meet him again on future trips. Advice for Potential Travellers Right.........I guess I need to mention breakfast. It lacked one thing. An egg !!!! Juice, croissant, bread and jam (lovely as it was) was not really enough to set you up for the day. An egg (even cooked the night before by the chef and eaten cold in the morning) would have been enough to have made a difference. The local shop rarely opens so possibly people need to bring snacks of some kind to supplement the baguette and fruit supplied for picnic lunch. If not......it turns out to be an excellent way to lose a bit of weight !!!!! Suggestions Corsica is a delightful island and well worth a visit.
