Experience Overview

In Mexico, death isn’t the end of the road — it’s the beginning of a huge party. Rooted in Aztec tradition, Oaxaca’s colourful Day of the Dead festivities have been drawing curious visitors for decades. This week-long tour throws you right into the middle of the action with four straight days of parades, macabre costumes, and market visits in search of sugar skulls. Then, it’s off to the coastal town of Puerto Escondido for some well-earned R&R on the beach you’ll be more than grateful for — or, if you’ve still got the energy, parties galore.

Highlights

  • Visit markets and learn about festival preparations
  • Take part in celebrations during a Day of the Dead parade
  • Relax in the tropical paradise of Puerto Escondido

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Oaxaca

Arrive at any time. Get to know your group tonight on the rooftop of a mezcalería. Sip some mezcal before heading to Txalaparta to dance the night away — sounds like the perfect way to kick off your adventure with your fellow travellers.
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a festival that runs from October 31 to November 2 to celebrate and remember loved ones who have deceased. Although the festival is to honour those who have passed on, it is a festive and upbeat celebration rather than somber gathering. Families cook feasts and offer them by the graves of those who have passed to encourage them to come back and join in on the festivities. Oaxaca is one of the main hubs of celebrations for Day of the Dead – the cemetery vigils and street parades make this an experience not to miss!

2

Day 2: Oaxaca

Stop by a local market to learn about local traditions and ceremonial objects used during Day of the Dead celebrations.

3

Day 3: Oaxaca

Join in the celebrations during a Day of the Dead parade. Experience all that is going on in the zócalo or main square.

4

Day 4: Oaxaca

Enjoy free time to take part in the celebrations in the zócalo, spend the day checking out nearby artisan towns, or visit the ruins of Monte Albán.

5

Day 5: Oaxaca/Puerto Escondido

Travel to the tropical paradise of Puerto Escondido. Enjoy free time for optional activities, or chill on the beach.

6

This is my second G trip and I have loved both of them! I love being immersed in the culture vs being on a resort and I think supporting local culture is important to me

I have truly enjoyed each G Adventures trip I have taken, which is why I keep coming back. The group travel style is so much fun, you get to meet people from all over the world. The guides have been amazing and I have had such an amazing time every trip!

I love the tours I have done. The activities are well planned and the guides are so knowledgeable and fun and I always make great friends. I feel safe which is the most important thing for me. The only reason I can't put 10 is because I feel that the tours are becoming overpriced recently and on top of high costs we also have to tip the CEOs which isn't fair. G Adventures is making a good amount of money, pay your employees properly, we shouldn't have to pay their salary on top of these high tour costs!!! I saw the same additional activities on sale at the places we visited for much cheaper than the cost the CEO was asking for, it would be cheaper to do these activities on our own than with the tour, so it's not fair that on top of everything we then have to tip the CEO. I also struggle to recommend G Adventures because I feel the COVID policy where if clients becomes ill on YOUR tour (where you take zero precautions to keep us safe while exposing us to travelers from around the world while not requiring masking/testing) we would get removed with no refund and left alone in a foreign country where we likely don't speak the language while feeling unwell is extremely harsh and cruel. I wanted to do other tours with G Adventures this year and have avoided longer tours as that's way too much of a risk to take and can't in good conscience recommend a company that just abandons clients with no refund for getting sick.

I have taken a few trips with G Adventures now (3 or 4) and I have found the trips to be very well organized and run, with good tour guides and interesting landmarks/sites. It is a great way of getting around a country in a short space of time. It may not suit everyone though, as they are often very fast-paced and don't give a lot of time for relaxing.
