Experience Overview
The Alta Pusteria valley, on the northern edge of the Dolomites, is an ideal destination for a winter hiking adventure with routes leading into Fanes-Sennes Natural Park, along the shoreline of Lago di Braies and beneath the jagged peaks of Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Wearing snowshoes or hiking books, we tackle forest trails and old military tracks to the magnificent viewpoints of Durrakopf and Strudelkopf, learning more about the impact of the First World War here along the way. Our base is the four-star Hotel Adler in the centre of Villabassa, the perfect place to unwind with Michelin-approved cuisine and a wellness centre.

Trip For You
This trip is rated Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings, visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip, please contact us.
Activities: To tackle the trials, we either snowshoe or hike, depending on the weather and terrain. The tour leader always chooses the most suitable option. For fresh snow, we use snowshoes. If the terrain has icy patches or flattened snow, we use ice spikes/cleats (which are provided) over hiking boots. If there is no snow, we just wear hiking boots.
Hike durations: Expect to spend five to six hours in the mountains each day. No snowshoeing experience is necessary, but good health and fitness are important, as hiking in snow can be more tiring than summer walking. Some hiking at higher altitude and occasional longer/harder days may be involved.
Climate: Certain hikes are dependent on weather conditions and alternative routes may be chosen as necessary. The overriding priority on the trip is group safety and conditions are assessed daily by the tour leader. A route is chosen based on current conditions and the forecast for that day. Our tour leaders are required not to proceed with any proposed route (including those mentioned in the brochure or Trip Notes) if they believe the risk to be unacceptable.
Snowshoes: Snowshoes are adaptable to fit most hiking boot sizes; however, if you wear larger than UK size 12 boots (US13 or EU47) please let us know at the time of booking. We can then confirm if we can provide suitable snowshoes for you.
Eating Drinking
Seven breakfasts, five lunches and six dinners are included, one of which will be an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner
Dinners are usually taken in the hotel restaurant, where we enjoy a lovely set menu. Please note, the meal on the evening of Day 1 may be a cold buffet instead of a hot meal.
Dinner is not included on the free day, which may be an excellent opportunity to try the à la carte menu on offer at the hotel or a local pizzeria recommended by your leader. Vegetarians are catered for; however, as this area is renowned for its meats, please be aware there may not be as much variety.
Five pack lunches are provided by the hotel. Each morning there is a buffet with items to make your own lunch (eg cured meat/ham, cheeses, boiled eggs, tomato, cakes, fruit etc). To reduce the use of plastic and single-use items, the hotel provides reusable cutlery and a paper bag, though we recommend bringing a reusable container.
Transportation
Most tours will operate with a combination of local buses and taxis to reach the walks. Certain dates may involve shared airport transfers with other tours in the area.

Weather Information
Throughout the Dolomites, winter can bring extended periods of fine, settled weather. From Christmas through to the end of February, average daytime temperatures range between -10C and 4C (14F and 39F) in the shade. These temperatures can feel surprisingly comfortable, largely because the air is very dry, and you will often be on the move. In periods of unsettled weather, the daytime temperature will rise to freezing point or higher, but it will feel much colder as the air carries much more moisture at these times. It can occasionally get windy, and the resulting wind chill can be significant.
Spending Money
For meals not included, allow €15‐€20 per lunch and €20‐€30 per dinner for restaurant meals. Of course, as you are free to choose where to eat, you can choose to spend as much as you like.
Local taxes: Many Italian cities have introduced a tourist tax for non‐residents. The local administration oversees the tax, which will be collected by the accommodation provider at check‐in or check‐out. This fee varies depending on the hotel category, the season and number of days of stay. It is usually €3.50 per person per night.
Optional excursions
There are several extra excursions available, exact prices and details will be confirmed locally.
The following can be used as a guide:
— Messner Mountain Museum Ripa Brunico: €8 per person — Cheese factory in Dobbiaco: €3.50 admission only, €6.50 including a small cheese tasting, €8.50 including a large cheese tasting.
From Villabassa there are regular trains and buses to the different villages of the Pusteria valleys
— Day trip to Ötzi the Ice Man in Bolzano: allow approximately €35 for travel and €10 for entry (train journey involves changes and takes approximately two hours)
Many ski areas are easily accessible from Villabassa, including Plan de Corones and Cortina d’Ampezzo, each offering a wide selection of alpine skiing possibilities. Only a 15‐minute bus journey away, San Candido and Versciaco have 33mi (53km) of downhill slopes for all skiing levels. Alpine skis can be hired in Dobbiaco for approximately €25 per day. For more information about the alpine skiing in this area, visit www.dolomitisuperski.com. Although we give information on the alpine skiing in our winter resorts, our leaders are not alpine instructors and may only be able to give limited advice about the facilities/conditions. All prices for optional activities are approximate and subject to change. Ask your leader for advice.
Tipping
Tipping for any local support staff is included on this trip, and will normally be taken care of by your tour leader.
Our ‘included tips’ will normally cover drivers, local specialist guides, certain hotel staff, and serving staff for included meals. Amounts will be in line with the local standard. Of course, if you wish to make a further tip for some extra special service you may do so.
Tips for the Tour Leader are not included. Whether to tip at all and the amount is entirely at your own discretion, but as a starting point we suggest around €20-€25 per person for the duration of the trip.

Wonderful experience Overall it was an outstanding experience. We got to challenge ourselves while in the hands of an extremely good guide, who kept us safe. The Dolomites are truly amazing. Most Inspirational Moment The trek to the top of Strudelkopf, yes that really is the name of the mountain. But the strudel came later. Other than the fact that Hotel Adler is such a fun place to stay, its most impressive feature is its authenticity. Thoughts on Group Leader Jeffery may very well be the best leader I’ve ever known. He clearly cares a great deal about the people he guides. He knew how to read situations and the pulse of the group. He did so in a friendly way, and demonstrated endless patience. Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you have plenty of clothing combinations. Various layers that can be interchanged with each other. We left out a rainproof layer and that was a mistake. Train for it, it is going to test you. Suggestions We will probably not do another trip, even though Exodus did a very good job. The reason being, we simply don’t like groups that much. Purely a personal preference.

Winter walking in Sudtirol / Alto Adige This was our first winter trip with Exodus, and our first Premium Adventure. We had a great time. The weather was excellent, and snow conditions better than we had expected. There was relatively little snowshoeing because the snow was compacted and there had been freeze/thaw conditions before we arrived, but Jenny, the leader, had arranged micro-spikes for us to fit over our boots which were brilliant – the feeling of confidence they give even on sheet ice is remarkable. We were able to do all of the treks planned and even managed a more extensive walk on one of the days because we were managing so well on the terrain. The group worked very well – there were a range of abilities but all taken account of. We had to be organised in the morning for a prompt departure at 8.30 but we all managed. The hotel was simply superb -the meals were outstanding and the staff attentive and friendly. Most Inspirational Moment The views... eg of the Tre Cime from the Monte Piano plateau equal with, The private evening meal held in the wine cellar of the hotel only for our group. Thoughts on Group Leader Jenny Advice for Potential Travellers Strongly recommend.

Great winter adventure. Stunning, challenging hikes in the glorious Dolomites; staying in a lovely, quirky, family-run hotel with good food and wine. Most Inspirational Moment Ploughing through snowy weather to reach a mountain hut serving the best goulash I've ever tasted. Thoughts on Group Leader Jenny was excellent. She was an attentive, caring guide who was very much a part of the group throughout. Advice for Potential Travellers If you have your own walking poles, bring them. There are plenty to borrow, but they are not height adjustable. Suggestions Exodus, please update the trip notes to suggest that travellers bring their own walking poles if they have them.

An adventure I think it was on the third day, high up in what seemed to be a white wilderness, that it occurred to me that I’d run out of superlatives – awesome, stunning, magnificent, all the usual stuff didn’t seem to do justice to the scenery. I settled on surreal. This is a trip that exceeds expectation though the guide did describe us as “the lucky group” partly because we had a big dump of snow on the second day despite the gloomster weather forecasts. I also found it tougher than I expected; snow shoeing is harder than it looks, and we started most of the walks at about the 2000m mark, so altitude played a part – we were asleep by 11, another new experience. The hotel was very comfortable though the food did not quite live up to the eulogies in other reviews – the pool was great for soothing tired limbs. Difficult to describe some of the interior decoration – eclectic, eccentric or possibly kitsch? The staff were certainly welcoming and attentive, and the rooms were warm and spacious.

Far Exceeded expectation This was my first Exodus trip and I was delighted with the experience. The beautiful, cosy, alpine Hotel Adler was fabulous. The food was outstanding and plentiful, 5 course suppers, a great, varied selection for breakfast and a well considered wine list. Each of the 5 walking days started with an 8.30 am pick up by minibus to various destinations. The walks were stunning. Apparently the moderate level it was graded was at times the very upper end of moderate. A big shout out to the very experienced, patient and caring Jenny, our guide. She went above and beyond to consider the different needs of our group of 9. Having never trekked before I was delighted with my achievement, which I certainly would not have managed without the invaluable tips and gentle encouragement from Jenny. I felt the standard of the hotel, the excellent food/service and the great itinerary of treks made this an amazing good value trip. Oh and very importantly for me , the comfy beds and a lovely deep bath with plenty of hot water really sold it to me after a tiring day

Walking in a winter wonderland This trip is a great way to get to know a corner of the Dolomites in the winter. The walks take you through wonderful scenery, often with no other people around. Walking up peaks in the fresh snow is a great feeling, especially when you get to the top! Most Inspirational Moment - Thoughts on Group Leader Jenny was not only a great leader, but also great company. Her love for the mountains shines through all the time. Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you are at a decent level of fitness. Some experience of walking up and down mountains (not necessarily in the snow) is essential.

Extraordinary landscapes and fabulous snowshoeing. Loved the snowshoeing. Each of the walks held interest and the challenges increased as the week progressed. We enjoyed the opportunity to sled down from Taistner Alm near Lutterkopf. Hotel Adler is wonderful with a lovely spa, fabulous 4 course dinners, picnic packed lunches and extensive breakfast buffet. Most Inspirational Moment Every walk was unique and had its own appeal, but we especially enjoyed Monte Piano as the weather and views were superb. Thoughts on Group Leader Our guide Jenny had extensive mountaineering experience but was new to this area and trip. Advice for Potential Travellers Anyone with reasonable fitness can enjoy the walks but you really do need to be pretty fit to make the most of this trip.

A Wonderful Week Great weather. Fresh snow plus lots of sunshine. Magnificent scenery, the Dolomites are really special both in winter and summer. Comfortable hotel with good facilities and friendly, helpful staff. Tasty interesting dinners with a very good wine list to choose from. A friendly, interesting group of fellow “snowshoeers” What really made the trip special was our guide Sara. She is everything you would wish for in a guide and I can only endorse all the other glowing mentions she receives in reviews. Most Inspirational Moment Each day was as memorable as the previous one. By the very nature of the week, the days are similar in that one is walking in the moutains through the snow but yet each is different with constantly changing vistas and challenges under foot. Thoughts on Group Leader As mentioned above, Sara was deserving of all the superlatives that she receives in these reviews. Kind, caring, considerate, knowledgeable, reliable, interesting, funny, the list goes on! Thanks Sara. Advice for Potential Travellers Just do it. You do need a reasonable degree of fitness but previous use of snowshoes is not a prerequisite.

snowshoeing in the dolomites A fabulous adventure. Challenging but beautiful and rewarding with undoubtedly the BEST guide in charge! We had fun, explored, felt nurtured and cared for. The hotel was gorgeous and the spa facilities were the perfect antidote to all of the hard work! As was the wonderful cuisine. A warm and friendly staff made us all feel very welcome. Take crampons….icy walking can be very tiresome if too little snow for the snowshoes. Most Inspirational Moment The ridge walk....beautiful virgin snow and astonishing views.... Thoughts on Group Leader Fabulous....went way beyond to ensure everyone felt comfortable and had everything to ensure they enjoyed their trip. Advice for Potential Travellers Take crampons! Suggestions Just...Do It!!

An impressive holiday on all counts What an experience. A week of varied routes; a forest trail amongst snow laden trees – like a Narnia snowscene, mountain ascents with beautiful scenery along the way, impressive mountain ranges, breathtaking lakes, stunning mountain huts . . . A fabulous family run hotel with warm and friendly staff, elegant rooms, comfortable beds and a deep bath with copious amounts of hot water. Immense breakfast choice, fabulous food and wine, cosy bar and snug and a relaxing wellness centre. Most Inspirational Moment Being sat on the top of snow covered Monte Piana on a beautiful blue sky day, surrounded by impressive mountains and feeling on top of the world. Thoughts on Group Leader I can’t speak highly enough of our group leader Sara Bull. She was fun, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and supportive to all clients. Nothing was too much trouble. Sara was very organised, hard working and safety conscious. Her love of nature and the environment was clearly evident and her enthusiasm was infectious. Sara helped make our experience of the Dolomites very special. Advice for Potential Travellers I think everything is covered in the trip notes really. I would just emphasise the need for sunscreen and recommend a water hydration system in your rucksack rather than phaffing about with bottles. Suggestions If you fancy experimenting with cross country skiing on your free day you are in the best place to experience it.

Fantastic holiday. We really enjoyed snowshoeing which allows you to walk on fresh deep snow and to highish altitudes . The Dolomites are very beatific and our guide Sara has a lot of geographical and historical knowledge. the Hitel Adler is excellent. Highly recommend this trip. Most Inspirational Moment The whole week was most enjoyable, active during the day and very good company with the rest of the group in the evening. Thoughts on Group Leader Sara , our group leader was friendly, well organised and an excellent guide . Advice for Potential Travellers Take a rucksack that has straps to attach snow shoes ( already suggested but I didn't) to and possibly some mini crampons that can fit over walking boots . There were times when we walked and carried our snow shoes . The tracks were a bit icy in places.

Snow Shoeing in the Dolomites Another great Exodus holiday. Nice hotel Great routes and scenery with a variety of Winter conditions ranging from blue skies and glorious sunshine to romantic fluttery snow falls in magical forests to wild full-on winter conditions of wind and heavy snow. Most Inspirational Moment Lutterkopf for the wind and snow on a broad ridge. Monte Piana for the glorious sunshine and views coupled with the fascinating history of the site from world war 1. Bruckele to Rossalm for the magic of climbing through the silence of a remote valley after heavy snow with trees coated in snow and hearing the distant roar of avalanches in the mountains. Thoughts on Group Leader Outstanding! A great guide in the form of Sara Bull, knowledgeable, good fun, encouraging and safety focussed but allowing the team to move freely and not corralling the group into a bunched single file route marching group. Advice for Potential Travellers Yes. You are in for a treat! Suggestions A fantastic holiday. Thanks to Exodus for great work in setting this up and solving any problems we had. Thanks to Sara Bull, our guide, for making the holiday into something very special. This holiday will live a long time in our memories.

Crampons were also used due to the snown conditions. Magnificent in every way – some of the finest scenery in Europe. Variety of walks with an afternoon stop at an Alpine hut for refreshments. Comfortable accommodation with health spar and plenty of food. One small niggle, you had to buy a bottle of expensive wine rather than a glass of Hauswein. Most Inspirational Moment Monte Piana - we were lucky to go to both summits with superb views of 3 Cime. Also Strudelkopf, Lutterkopf and Durakopf walks. Thoughts on Group Leader Sara Bull was fantastic. She was so encouraging and helped people discretely without them feeling embarrassed. She ensured everyone reached the summits. After the second last days walk in order to see what the conditions were like, she went on the walk she was thinking of doing on the last day, returning at 10pm. Advice for Potential Travellers Plenty to do on the free day using free train/bus passes. You can even go to Bozen to see Otzi

Great snowshoeing in stunning scenery Great variety of walks to mountain summits with fantastic views of the beautiful Dolomite scenery. Walking included a couple of ascents of 650m. We walked through wooded hillsides to mountain tops. On most days we stopped in mountain huts for a drink whilst we admired the scenery. Most Inspirational Moment The view from Lutterkopf - 360 degree panorama of the Dolomites and Austrian Alps. Reaching the top of Monte Piano with views of Tre Cime Thoughts on Group Leader Sarah was professional and friendly and dealt with the range of individual abilities in the group effectively. She was knowledgeable about the area’s geography and history. We had utmost confidence in her. On top of this we appreciated the biscuits she provided en-route! Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you have a decent level of fitness to get the most out of the 5 days snowshoeing as a couple of days have ascents of 650m Suggestions I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone who enjoys walking and mountain scenery. It would take a lot to beat snowshoeing here!

Fantastic holiday This was a great holiday for our mixed group of complete snowshoeing beginners and those who had tried it before. The scenery was stunning, helped by perfect weather! Sunny all day with brilliant blue, cloudless skies. The family run guest house was perfect for relaxing after a hard day walking. The pool and spa area were great, food delicious and a couple of warm bar areas for socialising. Most Inspirational Moment The best thing for me was being able to enjoy stunning mountain views without having to ski. I think I have found my perfect winter holiday! It was so peaceful, despite being half term school holidays. I also enjoyed the days we used crampons to walk rather then snowshoes, and the 4km sled run was great fun! Thoughts on Group Leader Sara was a great leader, very knowledgable of the area, attentive to the group and lots of fun. Advice for Potential Travellers It is hard work, so ensure you are reasonably fit. If your leader says you must drink 2-3l of water, then do it!

Fabulous Having tried snow shoeing for a day last year, I was keen to give it another go but was slightly concerned that a full week of the same thing would be a bit monotonous. I needn’t have worried-Sara our guide made the week varied and fun. We walked through woodland, along ridges, from peak to peak, along old military roads and even finished one walk on a sledge with the snow shoes strapped to our backs. Most Inspirational Moment Being at the top of the mountains with spectacular views made the walk up worth every step. Thoughts on Group Leader Exceptional. She was fun, knowledgable, caring and experienced. Sara went above and beyond to ensure everyone had a good time and was very patient with a group of adults with poor listening skills!! Advice for Potential Travellers A bit of training before you go will make the walking more enjoyable. We had unusually warm weather so layers to peel off and put back on again when the sun went down we’re essential. Suggestions At the end of every walk we had the option of doing some stretches, led by Sara, and I would recommend you do them- they helped hugely with stiff muscles! Everything at the hotel was of a high standard, from the swimming pool to the breakfast, and the staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming. I am so glad I went on this trip (my first Exodus holiday) but I am sure it won’t be my last.

Her attention to detail is second to none, and made sure each person in the group was looked after.
