Itinerary
Welcome to Australia’s Scenic Rim! Your adventure begins in Brisbane where you’ll be picked up at 9.30 am by your local leader. Meet your fellow travellers, then hit the road and drive towards Lamington National Park, named after your favourite coconut cake. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is dotted with ancient trees, tumbling waterfalls and varied wildlife, all best discovered on foot. Venture into the park for today's hike along the West Canungra Creek circuit and uncover its natural wonders with your leader’s expert guidance. This evening, perhaps watch the sunset from the deck, then maybe join your group for dinner and reminisce about the day’s discoveries.
Included Activities:
- Lamington National Park - West Canungra Creek Circuit
Accommodation:
- Motel (Number of Nights: 1)
Fill up on breakfast then drive towards Mount Cordeaux (Niamboyoo), with a stop for you to purchase a picnic lunch for later. Mount Cordeaux in Main Range National Park forms the northern side of Cunninghams Gap and overlooks the Scenic Rim. Follow the walking track up the mountain, passing by an abandoned goldmine shaft where gold was never found. The track ends just before the summit and you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with showstopping views of the Main Range National Park, the Darling Downs and even the high-rise buildings of Brisbane (Meeanjin). Continue on through high-altitude cool-temperate rainforest to Bare Rock for magnificent views spanning the northern Ramparts and Darling Downs. Descend the mountain, then join the Rainforest Circuit and venture through lush vegetation as your leader shares stories of the flora and fauna that call this place home. Climb to an incredible lookout point serving up views of Lake Moogerah and the Fassifern Valley, before heading to your accommodation for tonight.
Included Activities:
- Main Range National Park - Mount Cordeaux Track
- Main Range National Park - Rainforest Circuit
- Main Range National Park - Bare Rock Track
Accommodation:
- Motel (Number of Nights: 1)
Enjoy breakfast at your accommodation before driving to Mount Mitchell – a volcanic peak in the Main Range National Park to the south of Cunninghams Gap. Today, you’ll be climbing to its summit, and while some parts of the track are quite steep, you can rest assured that the views from the top make every step worth it! Cross through mountain heath, woodland and diverse rainforest, and be sure to turn your head to the sky in search of peregrine falcons above. Stop at the top to admire views of Mount Barney, the Main Range and the Moogerah Peaks before descending the mountain. Check into your accommodation – an eco-conscious homestead converted from a typical 1900s 'Queenslander' farmhouse where you’ll enjoy mountain views. In the late afternoon, you may like to take an optional stroll up to a lookout point and watch the sunset over Mount Barney with a glass of local wine, snacking on olives and cheese – a perfect way to enjoy this spectacular part of the world.
Included Activities:
- Main Range National Park - Mount Mitchell Track
Accommodation:
- Lodge (Number of Nights: 1)
After breakfast, join a First Nations guide for a smoking ceremony and cultural walk to Yellow Pinch lookout. Connect with Country using Aboriginal ideas, learn about Mt Barney from the land’s Traditional Owners and take time for silent reflection in this special place. This afternoon, visit Mount Barney (Boogarah Boogarah/Kaieee) where you’ll set off along the Lower Portals track, crossing undulating and sometimes rugged terrain. Pass through open bushland, rockpools and creeks, which you may need to cross in water up to thigh height in some places. You may be visited by a wallaby on your walk or spot black cockatoos flying above. For a final taste of local culture, enjoy a group BBQ dinner on the homestead grounds.

Step into a eucalyptus forest on the Curtis Falls track, which eventually gives way to lush rainforest punctuated with towering ferns. Continue to the shady Palm Grove circuit through subtropical rainforest – be sure to look up to see strangler figs and piccabeen palm trees, and look down to see collections of unusual fungi. Return to Brisbane in the afternoon, where your adventure comes to an end at approximately 4 pm.

This trip was incredible! The walks were so enjoyable and full of wildlife- we saw Cat birds, wallabies, Lyre Birds, and even a friendly Python! Beautiful trails that are easy to walk while taking it all in! This trip is the perfect opportunity to experience the Scenic Rim on a variety of trails and activities that teach you tons about the area and First Nations. Truly an iconic, beautiful experience that I would recommend to anyone!

The Scenic Rim was a great trip. Our leader Joel has an amazing knowledge and passion for the area and loved sharing it with us. The walks are easily achieved by anyone with reasonable fitness . They are all on formed tracks apart from one very short Rick hop which is optional. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring a new area and it has whet my appetite to go back and continue exploring.

This is a fabulous trip for people who are able to walk 10km in hilly rocky areas. I live in Brisbane and discovered many rainforests without catching a plane!

Just back from an amazing holiday walking the Scenic Rim. We hiked over 50km up hill, down dale, across creeks and through beautiful pockets of ancient Gondwana rainforest. The scenery was stunning, the company was awesome, and I can't recommend our tour leader, Joel, and Intrepid Travel highly enough!

It was a last minute decision on my part to join Intrepid’s Walk the Scenic Rim trip, but it turned out to be the best decision. The walk was challenging in parts, but manageable, and the scenery spectacular. The days were full but never rushed and the smaller group was perfect for such a trip. My fellow walkers were a great group of people with a shared love of the outdoors, and a quiet drink at the end of the day! Kudos to our guide Fleur who was so organised, knowledgeable, and fun! It was a fantastic trip which surpassed my expectations and I would highly recommend.

The scenic rim trip was fantastic. The hikes were really good and generally not too challenging (except for my dodgy knee!). The Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony was great. We visited a couple of local wineries and had dinner at 3 different country pubs which was fun. Mt Barney Lodge was a beautiful old building full of history. The guide Jonny was well organised and very knowledgeable, and the group were all good company and supportive. I'd definitely recommend this trip.

The Scenic Rim was a revelation to me - I knew nothing about this extraordinary area. With COVID travel restrictions I have explored more Australian based trips. This trip was magical, particularly after a very wet winter. The scenery throughout the rim sparkled. The walks were varied and show-cased the varied terrain. Accommodation was comfortable and food was generous. Our guide, Fleur, consulted us regularly and provided for the range of fitness levels and dietary needs. We had a very cohesive supportive group which enhanced our experience. I have the highest praise for all aspects of this tour and would recommend it to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Thank you, Intrepid, and more particularly, Fleur, for such a special few days.

The trip was well organised and the group size was perfect. The trip gave me an opportunity to visit parts of Queensland that I may not have visited. The walks were challenging at times, but not too dangerous. If you are looking to destress for a few days and see beautiful scenery, than this trip is perfect.

This was my first trip to Queensland and I'm so glad I did it! The Scenic Rim is an amazing place with lots of epic scenery, great food, and of course, the beautiful hikes. Our guide Aaron was very knowledgeable and passionate about his work. My fellow participants were great, too, and we all looked out for each other which made the trip even better. The itinerary on this trip was very diverse and I learned as someone who isn't from Australia. If you're thinking of an adventure in beautiful Queensland for a few days, DO IT.

The Scenic Rim trip rewards you with fantastic views and beautiful forests. It was quite challenging for a not very fit 64 year old like me but I’m so happy that I took it on.
