Trip For You
This trip has been rated Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.   Most days involve some driving and sightseeing in addition to the walks. There are descents each day that may be steep (but not technically difficult). The walking is seldom too demanding, although some of the terrain is rocky underfoot. Some of the paths are quite narrow and fairly undulating, and on Day 3 there are sections that involve scrambling over rocks and boulders. A pair of comfortable shoes or sports shoes will be handy for the evenings and journeys to/from the start/end points.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts and five picnic lunches are included. A Cypriot breakfast buffet is provided with bread/toast, butter, jam, fresh juice, milk, local yoghurt, eggs and honey, and coffee/tea. There are also hot options available, such as eggs and omelettes. Cypriot food includes fish and seafood caught by the Kyrenia fishing fleet, excellent meat dishes, stuffed vegetables, fruit – particularly figs, oranges, nectarines, grapes, olives and pomegranates – and breads and cheeses. Picnic lunches using locally sourced food are provided where specified. On other days, we stop at a suitable cafe or restaurant. Kyrenia has many restaurants to choose from for evening meals.
Transportation
A minibus will be used for all transfers during the week.

Itinerary

1
Day 1: Start Kyrenia

The adventure begins in Kyrenia, a harbour town and great base from which to explore North Cyprus. Archaeological excavations show the area was first settled as far back as the 10th century BCE, and today historic buildings and winding lanes offer a glimpse into the past, sitting alongside more modern additions. If there’s time, make use of the hotel facilities – perhaps toasting the adventures to come with a cocktail in the garden bar. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella (or similar)

2
Day 2: Transfer to Bellapais and visit the monastery; walk to Catalkoy; afternoon Kyrenia Castle visit

This morning, we have a welcome briefing before a 20-minute transfer to Bellapais, a mountain village home to the ruins of Bellapais Abbey, a medieval gothic monastery. There’s free time to explore, before a short walk to Catalkoy village, where we catch our transfer back to Kyrenia. The walk today is mainly along an old dirt track; it is fairly undulating, with views towards the coast along the way. Upon our return, we embark on a tour of Kyrenia. It includes a visit to the harbour-front castle, a city landmark and important fort for civilisations as diverse as the Ottomans, Venetians and British. Alongside glorious sea views and fascinating architecture, the castle houses the Shipwreck Museum, home to a fourth-century Greek merchant vessel and its cargo. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella (or similar) Leisurely walking day

3
Day 3: Transfer to the ancient hermitage of St Hilarion Castle; visit the site and walk to Malatya village via Karaman

We transfer approximately 25 minutes to Saint Hilarion Castle, a former stronghold within the Kyrenia mountains. Originally a hermitage, the monastery and church were built in the 10th century and later fortified. The site consists of three main parts, linked by steep staircases: the lower section was for the stables and men of arms; the middle was home to the church; and the upper was for reserved for royalty. We spend time exploring the castle and enjoying the magnificent views of Kyrenia, before a walk through the hills to Malatya village. The first section cuts through forest, following an old riverbed with some loose rocks underfoot. We then reach an old dirt track, which we follow into the village, with coastal views ahead and Saint Hilarion Castle behind. We walk through some small villages today, getting a good sense of local life along the way, and pausing for lunch in one of the village squares. We transfer back to the hotel this afternoon, stopping to enjoy a drink on the seafront if time allows. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella (or similar)

4
Day 4: Head to the Karpas peninsula; visit the Incirli Cave and Crusader castle at Kantara; walk to Kaplica beach

We head east (approximately 1hr 30min) to the Karpas peninsula. In the morning, we visit Incirli Cave, the largest on the island, which contains an amazing collection of stalactites and stalagmites, before heading to the Crusader castle at Kantara. Kantara Castle is one of three mountain fortresses built by the Byzantines along the Kyrenia mountains, along with Saint Hilarion and Buffavento. It was used as a beacon station, communicating with Buffavento by fire. The castle has an incredible 360-degree view; on a clear day, you can see both coasts of the Karpas peninsula and the Turkish mountains. After a picnic lunch near the castle, we walk down the slopes of the Five Finger Mountains to Kaplica beach. If time allows, there will be a chance for a swim in the sea after our walk, before our transfer (approximately one hour) back to Kyrenia. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella (or similar) Leisurely walking day

5
Day 5: Free day to relax or take an excursion to Famagusta

Today has been left free for further exploration of the island. There are several options available, but a trip to the ancient ruins of Salamis and the historic city of Famagusta is the standout attraction for many. It starts with a visit to St Barnabas Monastery, followed by a tour of Salamis, which remains the biggest Roman site on Cyprus. There will be a lunch break by the sea before the tour continues to the ghost town of Varosha, which has been deserted since 1974. The trip finishes in the old walled city of Famagusta, home to St Nicholas Cathedral. This tour can be arranged locally (please note, you may be joining a larger group on this tour). Of course, you could choose to spend the day relaxing or exploring under your own steam. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella (or similar)

6
Day 6: Visit Buffavento Castle for magnificent views; walk to Bellapais village

We start with a 45-minute transfer to Buffavento Castle, the highest Crusader castle on the island and a highlight of the week. It was built in the 11th century to defend against the Arabs, and control an important mountain pass. It’s approximately 680 steps to the top, but the dramatic location offers glorious views over Kyrenia and the Five Finger Mountains. This afternoon, we walk from the castle, taking the footpath that leads down to Bellapais village. We have lunch at the top of the mountain and see both sides of the Five Finger Mountains. Our route takes us along a narrow path, which is a bit rocky underfoot, passing between the mountains, and offering us views in both directions. The vehicle meets us in Bellapais, and we transfer about 10 minutes back to Kyrenia. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella (or similar) Moderate walking day

7
Day 7: Spend a day in the Five Finger Mountains; walk includes visiting Kyrenia Rock and Sourp Magyar Armenian monastery

We transfer approximately 30 minutes to the start of our last walk, the Five Finger Mountains. We take a path up towards the Herbarium of Alevkaya (currently closed for renovation), where we stop for lunch. This afternoon, we walk to Sourp Magyar, the only Armenian monastery in the mountains, and on to Kyrenia rock, which offers excellent photo opportunities. Accommodation: Hotel Pia Bella (or similar) Leisurely walking day

8
Day 8: End Kyrenia

Our adventure ends after breakfast in Kyrenia. Those on the group transfer will head back to Larnaca for their onwards flights.

Discovering countries, cultures, environments, cities, mountain ranges, deserts, coasts and jungles; exploring this amazing planet we all live on. At Exodus, we know what makes you tick when it comes to holidays. It’s a desire shared by so many others. A yearning to visit new places and come home with a real sense of what they’re all about. This means delving into local traditions, cultures, cuisine, lifestyles – anything that contributes to its unique identity. At the same time, we always remember that we are only guests. So we travel courteously and respectfully, in smaller groups to minimise our impact, to ensure that every Exodus holiday is a beneficial experience for everyone involved. This is a philosophy we take with us around the world, helping you reach some incredible destinations on 500 itineraries across over 90 separate countries. We also strive to provide as much flexibility and choice as we possibly can, making it simple for you to experience a very different holiday. Exodus started life on 4 February 1974 when two friends got together to provide an overland truck to travel to the Minaret of Jam, deep in the heart of the Hindu Kush, the most inaccessible of the world’s great monuments. Walking in Northern Cyprus Whilst the hotel was good quality with a pool the hotel experience was spoiled by an in-house disco on both Wednesday and Saturdays. The noise made it impossible to sleep or even eat TV until after 11.30 p.m.. The Castles were interesting and whilst walking enjoyable the combination of heat and rough tracks made it feel more difficult than the advertised grade Most Inspirational Moment Views from the mountaintop castles Thoughts on Group Leader Very thorough in his preparation and control of the group Advice for Potential Travellers Be prepared for heat and rough tracks with some steep hills. Climbing the steps to the top of the castles is worth it for the views.

Superb walking holiday in this lovely country The walks were amazing, the food was great, the hotel was excellent being about a 20 minute walk from the beautiful harbour of Kyrenia and the weather was warm after a wet first morning! Most Inspirational Moment Climbing the 680 steps up to and then back down from Buffavento Castle and being rewarded by the fantastic views, seeing only 4 other people on that climb, in fact maybe the whole day. Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer was patient, helpful and knowledgeable with a good sense of humour. He provided us with a detailed history of Northern Cyprus with lots of other information and arranged some very tasty meze meals. He found a Chameleon and a Blunt-nosed Viper for us too! Advice for Potential Travellers You do need to be fit. Wear walking boots and long trousers for walks through the scrub. Take an extra water bottle as the hotel provides a glass bottle of water with the packed lunch which added to the weight.

A beautiful country. A wonderful walking holiday in a beautiful part of the world. The highlight for me will always be the castles. Spectacular location and amazing views. Our guide Gizer was amazing and gave us a wonderful overview of North Cyprus. Very centrally located accommodation with easy access to the charming centre of Kyrenia. Most Inspirational Moment The castles and the views from the top. Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer was very helpful and a font of knowledge. Advice for Potential Travellers Generally an amazing holiday. However, I wouldn't call the two walks listed as "moderate" moderate. They are serious hikes and I thoroughly enjoyed walking them. But some may actually find it "strenuous". Also, if you have a problem with heights, the castles are not for you. I just loved them!

Great walking holiday learning about the history of North Cyprus along the way Overall an enjoyable week of walking with a great guide (Gizer) and driver (Omer). The walks were as stated in the trip notes and places visited were definitely well worth the walks. A great group of 11 in total, that definitely helped make the week a lovely break. The hotel Pia Bella is well situated in Kyrenia, with excellent facilities, and the staff were all very helpful. If you enjoy walking and visiting historical sites, this trip is for you. Most Inspirational Moment I found the visit to Varosha on our 'free day' really interesting, especially hearing of why it is deserted. The views on the walks are also inspiring, well worth the climbs. Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer was a knowledgeable guide providing the group with lots of information on the history of the island, also information on great places to eat and things to see in the locations we visited. Gizer looked after us all, making sure we had what we needed. Advice for Potential Travellers Some of the walks are through scrub which can cause scratches etc, so take long trousers with you for those walking days and walking poles if needed, as lots of 'undulations' to navigate. Some of the walks are also quite challenging, but Gizer ensured there were plenty of rest stops along the way.

Great Trip This was a busy week of walking, sometimes on quite difficult paths. However it was combined with visits to beautiful cultural sites and a lot of information about Cyprus – both historical from way back and the more recent and current political situation. We also saw some wildflowers, lizards, and a chameleon. Most Inspirational Moment Difficult to choose. The views from the hills as we walked through them, the ruins at Salamis, and the chameleon were all highlights. Thoughts on Group Leader Our leader, Gizer, was very engaging, knowledgable, patient and helpful. Our driver, Omar, was also helpful and professional and coped admirably when there was a problem with the minibus engine. They are both a credit to Exodus. Advice for Potential Travellers Much of the time we could use euros or our cards to pay for meals, etc. We did need some Turkish lira and Gizer very helpfully explained how to get money from ATMs or to exchange currency on our first walk into the old town of Kyrenia. Walking poles are essential for some as in places the paths are steep (up and down) and a little unstable with loose stones and large boulders.

Great views, fabulous scenery and lots of history. A really good trip with excellent walking. Our guide Gizzer was very knowledgeable and good company. Most Inspirational Moment Kantor Castle and the walk that day. Thoughts on Group Leader Gizzer was informative, has a good sense of humour and made us feel looked after. Advice for Potential Travellers Remember good walking boots with ankle supports. Also the weather can be hot so be prepared for this on the longer walks.

Excellent mix of culture and walking This week had it all treading a good balance between some culture and the lovely walking in the hills of northern cyprus. Our guide, Gizer, made the trip very relaxing giving us just the right amount of information at the right time so we were always aware of what to expect the next day. It was also very interesting to hear about the situation between northern cyprus and cyprus. I would definitely recommend this trip. The three meals that Gizer organised for the group were delicious. Most Inspirational Moment The views from the castles having climbed many steps to get to the top. Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent Advice for Potential Travellers Good walking boots as the paths are quite rocky

Great trip A really interesting trip with enjoyable walks, good company and a great leader. Most Inspirational Moment There were great views from the castles at the top of the mountains. A good reward for climbing steps. Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer was a great leader, organising interesting optional trips on the free day and final day. He also arranged 3 evening meals for those interested at varied, excellent restaurants. He also gave good restaurant recommendations. He is very knowledgeable about the area. Advice for Potential Travellers Take walking poles for some of the downhill sections. You do need a decent level of fitness.

A Must Do Trip Currently on the holiday. Having a wonderful walking experience although weather not been great but improving. Learning the history of the separation of the island very interesting too. Most Inspirational Moment Surviving the steps to the castle! Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer is a wonder. He is suffering with a virus but still being an amazing guide and companion. So knowledgeable and helpful. Amazing man. Advice for Potential Travellers Don't travel on group booking if offered with Lufthansa. The connection time is too short a connectione at Frankfurt (huge airport and long journey from one terminal to another) and luggage never arrived for all group booked passengers. Big hassle when luggage eventually arrives in Greece ( Larnaca) but can't be delivered to Turkish (Northern Cyprus) hotel. BIG stress and hassle.

Outstanding Excellent guide, Gizer. Excellent driver, Ermer (spelling?). Eleven other interesting (not a euphemism) customers. Good walks, two reminded me of previous grade 3/4 but it’s subjective, to some extent. Good weather. Ten out of ten. Most Inspirational Moment Several. Selecting one, the view from Buffavento Castle but note: it's a LOT of steps. Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent

Walking in Cyprus Feb. 2024 Enjoyable week, weather was warm and pleasant despite it only being early Feb. A little too much sight seeing and not enough walking . However the walking days were very enjoyable . Most Inspirational Moment Swim in the sea in February. Thoughts on Group Leader Ingen was helpful and informative, had an excellent knowledge of the local area and Cyprus as well as and the best restaurants to go to. ( we ate very well every night!) . Sometimes he tended to give too much information so one missed the overview. The driver Omar was very pleasant also and very available even taking us out to dinner by bus so we could get to restaurants out of Kyrenia. Advice for Potential Travellers Good for pleasant weather in February.

Great experience Excellent walking holiday, which was very well organised. The guide was very friendly and made it a great experience. Most Inspirational Moment The walks were testing but a great achievement once we had finished. The group jelled very well and always supported by our guide. Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer the leader was excellent, always concerned that everyone was included and made it a great holiday. Very knowledgeable about local history, flora and forna. Advice for Potential Travellers A decent level of fitness is required as some of the walks are a stiff test.

Interesting Country - Full of History The island has a fascinating history and it was good to try to understand the recent history that has created North Cyprus, whilst participating in walks with great scenery. Plus visits to castles, abbeys and monasteries. Made even better by a great group of fellow travellers. The Pia Bella Hotel rooms are spacious and of excellent quality and good air conditioning. The breakfast buffet offers a wide choice. But if you favour European continental breakfast, there is no fish, very little meat and no pastries or croissants. There is an excellent pool, open till 6pm. The bar was often busy but service was good and prices competitive. Most Inspirational Moment The view from the top of Kantara Castle, where you can see both the north and south coasts of the island. The optional trip to Famagusta was well worth taking - so full of history - both ancient and modern. And the cave at Incirli. Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer is an excellent guide and a great ambassador for his country. His knowledge of the full history of the island is extensive, which he imparts in an easy to understand, meaningful way. His restaurant recommendations were excellent. And good value. Advice for Potential Travellers A couple of the walks are quite long and intense on loose surfaces. Ensure you have good walking boots/shoes with grippy soles. Use of poles is recommended. Euros are widely accepted, but paying in Lira offers better value. Contactless is widely accepted, but paying in cash for a beer or coffee preferable. Some days are long but usually return in time for a quick swim in the excellent pool.

Awesome trip Awesome trip with a home base in an amazing hotel with great views, pool and breakfast buffet. The walks were different terrain every day, beautiful scenery. Gizer was an excellent, knowledgeable, funny guide. He arranged dinners, trips, could not ask for a better leader of the group. The only complaint: very hot weather that made the hiking less enjoyable than ideal. Definitely recommended! Most Inspirational Moment Must take the day trip to Famagusta and Dalamis! Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent! Advice for Potential Travellers Be ready for hot weather.

Excellent Trip A great trip with a good combination of walking, sightseeing, culture and history Most Inspirational Moment Lots to choose from but the optional trip to Famagusta stands out for me. So interesting! Thoughts on Group Leader Gizer is an excellent group leader. He is very knowledgeable and he brings alive the various sites visited with his explanations and stories. He is very caring and considerate, and goes the extra mile to ensure every member of the group has everything they want and need. His evening meetings by the pool bar, provide a great chance to chat about the day you've had and to make sure everyone knows what to expect and what to take for the next day. He kindly provided a trip to Nicosia on the last day which was fascinating and so much better then ‘kicking our heels’ before the late flight back. Advice for Potential Travellers It's VERY hot in September, we had mid to high 30s most days which I found a bit too hot for walking. Take some lira (or get it from the ATM) as it’s useful especially for tips and the odd extra drink at mealtimes, however cards are also widely accepted.
