Experience Overview

Walk the Amalfi Coast, where cliffs rise sharply from the Mediterranean Sea and pastel-coloured fishing towns nestle in the coves below. It’s a special place for anyone who visits but is a spiritual home for us. We’re a pioneer of group walking getaways here with more than 20 years’ experience running this trip, while our family-run hotel in the village of Bomerano, away from the bustle, has welcomed countless numbers of our groups. The result is a finely tuned adventure taking in: ancient hillsides; quaint towns, including Positano, Ravello and Amalfi itself; a visit to Mount Vesuvius and the remains of Pompeii; and arguably the best coastal walk in the world: the Path of the Gods. Walking in summer? If you wish to travel in July or August, the warmest months, we offer a special itinerary on selected weeks. It features shortened, easier walks, visits to beaches with few tourists, free time in Sorrento, and a visit by boat to Positano. See Walking The Amalfi Coast – Summer Edition for dates, prices and the day-to-day schedule.

Trip For You
This trip involves four days of walking with low altitude throughout and has an average rating of Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us. Duration of walks: Usually four to six hours, including lunch stops. Being in good health and fitness is essential to fully enjoy the walking experiences.Terrain and path type: These vary from paved tracks to forest trails. Some sections involve long staircases, steps, some steep climbs and descents on slightly loose terrain. There are some narrow pathways alongside sheer drops, so you need to be comfortable with heights. Optional walks on Mount Vesuvius are on rocky cinder/gravel trails and are likely to be loose underfoot, with steep sections and some large drops. On most days, there are considerable sections of steps (more than 1,500), so not suitable for those with knee and joint problems.Climate: The Amalfi Coast normally has a relatively mild and sunny climate, but heatwaves and heavy rains are possible. This, along with consecutive walking days, may increase the difficulty of the trip. Considering all of this, we recommend you arrive physically prepared to tackle slightly more challenging routes by exercising regularly before the trip. You should also bring suitable equipment with you, including sturdy hiking boots and walking poles, and always stay hydrated. Accommodation: It’s likely there will be more than one group at Hotel Due Torri, which is also occasionally open to non-Exodus guests. Nevertheless, our experienced team of leaders is used to this and tailor itineraries to ensure you enjoy each activity with your own small group. Any additional groups are either on a different tour or follow an alternative itinerary. High season: From May to September, popular towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano and Amalfi, plus the island of Capri, can be busy.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts, four packed lunches and six dinners are included. Breakfast is continental style with a choice of cereals, bread, eggs, ham, cheese, fruits, pastries, yoghurt, orange juice and milk, plus an array of teas/coffee. Included packed lunches usually consist of a sandwich filled with a choice of cold meats, tuna, or local cheeses. All evening meals are taken in the hotel, where the chef takes great pride in showcasing the best of regional foods, including dishes such as scialatielli all’amalfitana (homemade pasta with seafood) and branzino all’acqua pazza (sea bass in crazy water). Dinners usually consist of four courses, commencing with antipasti, followed by soup and/or pasta, a main meat dish with salad or vegetables, and dessert. On certain evenings, there is the opportunity to learn how to make Neapolitan pizza. Please note, drinks are not included with meals but available to purchase. Several dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free, are also well catered for. Please advise us of any dietary requirement on booking.

Weather Information
Southern Italy has a hot, dry climate in summer and cooler but sometimes wet spring and autumn periods. Unseasonable cold spells and rain are possible at any time of year, so we recommend bringing some warm clothes, especially useful in Bomerano where evening temperatures can be lower than expected. Summer can be very hot with daytime temperatures in July and August reaching up to 34C-37C (93F-99F) on the coast. What to expect in the low season (October to March) Autumn and winter may be cooler than you’d expect; average temperatures in December, January and February are 8C-17C (46F-63F). Prepare for periods of colder weather (with temperatures sometimes dropping to 2C/36F) especially at higher elevations – there may even be snow atop the Lattari Mountains and sometimes in Bomerano itself. During the winter up to early spring, there is also more rain than usual (with an average of one day in four affected) but there are still plenty of enjoyable crisp sunny days. Overall, the Amalfi Coast is still a great destination in winter as the coastline is beautiful year-round and you have the chance to visit the sights without the summer crowds and traffic.
Spending Money
For lunches not included, budget €15-€25, depending on whether you choose a set menu in a cafe or restaurant. Approximately €30-€40 should be enough for an evening meal including drinks. Local taxes: Many Italian cities have a tourist tax for non-residents. This is collected by the accommodation provider at check-in or check-out. For this trip, please allow €14. Children and people aged 75 or over are exempt from this tax. Optional activities payable locally: — Return transfers to Herculaneum and Naples on the free day can be arranged locally and cost approximately €40-€80 per person, depending on group size — Return boat to Capri: €38 slow boat, €44 hydrofoil (seasonal and depending on weather/sea conditions) — Capri cable car: €12 round trip — Herculaneum: Entrance fee to archaeological site €16; audio tour €6.50; local guide €10 per person — Ravello: Villa Cimbrone entrance fee €10/Villa Rufolo entrance fee €7 — Amalfi: Entrance fee to the cathedral €3 — National Archaeological Museum of Naples entrance fee €22
Tipping
Although optional, a tip for the tour leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated. As a guideline, we recommend a contribution of €20 per client per tour leader. We also recommend a minimum of €10 per group for local guides at Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. It is also customary to tip private bus drivers (please allow approximately €10 per person for the week). Groups normally like to show their appreciation for hotel staff by leaving a tip at the end of their stay. We recommend a contribution of approximately €15 per person for the local staff at the hotel.

Accommodation

Hotel Due Torri, a family-run three-star albergo in Bomerano
We spend seven nights at Hotel Due Torri, a mid-sized hotel run by the welcoming Acampora family, who turn out authentic Campanian dishes in the restaurant and put on a show with their fun pizza-making demonstrations. It sits in Bomerano, a peaceful village that forms part of the Agerola municipality, up in the hills and away from the often-bustling Amalfi Coast. Being higher up, the hotel benefits from cooler nights, although beaches are not too far away. There is a small heated outdoor pool (usually open from mid-April to mid-October) and energy is generated by a solar panel system. The 41 rooms vary in style and size and are spread across two main buildings and two cosy apartments a short walk from the main hotel. A limited number of upgraded rooms, which include a hot tub, power shower and fridge, are also available for a supplement payable before departure. Please ask your sales representative for further information. Itinerary

1
Day 1: Start in the village of Bomerano, Agerola

Enjoy a warm welcome from our local hosts, the Acampora family, who run our base for the week, Hotel Due Torri. If you have time, you may want to get out and explore the village, Bomerano, a quaint retreat high in the hills and away from the often-busy Amalfi Coast below. Once everyone’s ready, we enjoy a welcome briefing at the hotel – a great chance to get to know the group a little, meet our leader and ask any questions you may have. Want to extend your adventure? Speak to your sales representative about joining our pre-tour extension in Rome or adding extra nights to your trip, either at Hotel Due Torri or the four-star Palazzo Salgar in Naples.

2
Day 2: An impressive walk to the top of Monte Tre Calli for wide-open views of the coastline

From the hotel, it’s a short stroll to the village square (or, in Bomerano’s case, a triangle) and the start of today’s walk. The circular route provides a good chance to stretch our legs; following a mixture of paths and tracks, we summit Monte Tre Calli to be rewarded with wide-open views of the jagged coastline and seemingly endless blue sea. The Agerola Plain and Bomerano are laid out below us and, on a clear day, we can see as far as Capri, an idyllic island hideout for many celebrated artists and writers over the past 200 years. After admiring the majestic scenery, descend to Bomerano and enjoy a rest before a hearty dinner.

3
Day 3: Follow mule tracks and steps down to Amalfi; free afternoon to explore

We walk towards Amalfi, a town popular with the British since Edwardian times when the upper classes favoured it as a pleasant place to spend their winters. The route has a downhill bias, following the path from Bomerano at 2,297ft (700m) to the Mediterranean shores, accompanied by wonderful coastal views. There are approximately 2,000 steps today, but also plenty of opportunities to rest and go at your own pace. On arrival, we see the large duomo (cathedral) dominating the town with a brightly tiled cupola (dome), which, along with the baroque facade and interior, is a typical example of regional architecture. Take time to explore the town, swim in the small bay or enjoy a gelato before a transfer back to Bomerano.

4
Day 4: Visit the Mount Vesuvius crater, admire the Bay of Naples and see the Pompeii ruins

We transfer to the slopes of Vesuvius to view the volcanic crater, which also overlooks the beautiful Bay of Naples, the waters of which span between Naples, the regional capital, and Sorrento, the town famed for lemon groves. Depending on weather conditions, it may be possible to join an expert volcanologist on an extended walk around the caldera and beyond (optional). After lunch, we travel by bus to Pompeii. On the lower foothills of the volcano, it was a thriving port town until Vesuvius catastrophically erupted over two days in 79CE and the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for 1,700 years, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the preserved remains providing an amazing insight into life in a Roman city, complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes – some of which still have walls adorned with detailed frescoes. You may explore the site this afternoon, perhaps opting for a detailed tour accompanied by a local guide.

5
Day 5: Walk from Ravello to Amalfi through the forests of the Valle delle Ferriere nature reserve

Today’s walk starts in Ravello, a town favoured by the Bloomsbury set and other artists and intellectuals due to its secluded location and inspirational scenery. Before setting off for the walk, we have free time to explore the town and visit Villa Cimbrone or Villa Rufolo with their meticulously landscaped gardens and breathtaking sea views (optional). The route today is mostly downhill with a considerable number of steps. After descending and taking a quick stop in Pontone village, we continue along wooden bridges and shady paths carpeted with wildflowers in season, to the beautiful moss-clad waterfalls within the closed gates of Valle delle Ferriere nature reserve. Finally, following the stream gently downwards through lemon groves, past the shells of former paper factories (a major local industry from the 12th to 19th centuries) and medieval ironworks, we reach Amalfi.

6
Day 6: Free day to relax or take a boat to Capri, visit Naples or Herculaneum (all optional)

Enjoy a day at leisure to relax at the hotel or go to the seafront. The hotel also offers a range of private transfers to some of the most popular attractions in the region. Options include visiting Herculaneum, which was also destroyed during the Vesuvius eruption. The city was buried in mud rather than ash; some say this led to the site being even better preserved than the bigger Pompeii. You might instead choose to take a ferry to the chic island of Capri and the funicular through lemon groves up to Capri town. Furthermore, Sorrento or the National Archaeological Museum of Naples are also possible. Please note, all these optional excursions are subject to availability and payable locally (activity prices are dependent on the number of people joining). The tour leader will assist you with bookings and arrangements. Alternatively, spend the day by the pool or in true Italian style in a cafe, sipping espresso and watching the world pass.

7
Day 7: Path of the Gods with superb panoramic views to Positano; return by boat to Amalfi; try locally made mozzarella

We take one of the finest walks on the planet. Leaving the hotel, it’s a short stroll through quiet Bomerano before we join the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), which provides some of the most evocative views in the world: ragged cliffs speckled with tiny villages and extensive vistas of the sparkling Mediterranean. The route follows rolling hills, the contours of the land and the coast. The trail is broken by insights into local life, passing shepherd huts and ancient stone houses carved into the limestone before we descend a long series of steps to colourful Positano, an almost vertical town clinging to the rockface of a sheltered bay. Take time to explore the alleyways lined with wisteria and designer boutiques or have a dip in the sea before returning to Bomerano by boat and bus (seasonal) in the late afternoon. Before dinner, we can see how the local smoked mozzarella is made and taste the mouth-wateringly fresh final product.

8
Day 8: End Bomerano, Agerola

This morning is our last at the hotel, which may feel more like a second home by now. If your flight leaves later this evening, you’re welcome to make use of the hotel facilities after check-out and enjoy an optional lunch here. Alternatively, if you'd like to extend your adventure, join our post-trip extension to Rome, where you can explore with a ‘hop on, hop off’ guided bus tour that visits icons of the city, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

Amazing first visit to Amalfi Coast Fantastic way to explore the Amalfi Coast Most Inspirational Moment Walking the Path of the Gods, truly beautiful Thoughts on Group Leader Our group was very fortunate to have Veriano as our leader. His enthusiasm and knowledge was limitless. Always conscious of everyone's wellbeing and safety, and was especially encouraging when having to tackle the vast number of steps on the Amalfi Coast!! Advice for Potential Travellers Some of the walks were pretty strenuous over uneven ground, so reasonable fitness required Suggestions The food and hospitality at the Hotel 2 Torri was very good

Globally good holiday Generally a good time but some niggles. Very good walks with spectacular views, but which could be physically challenging. Most Inspirational Moment The walks to the top of the Vesuvio and Pompeii were awe inspiring, and both guides were excellent. Thoughts on Group Leader Our leader was all right, but from what we gathered from other groups, we seem to have got a more basic service. I didn't have the impression from his responses to my questions that he was terribly interested in sharing the local culture that much. Also, we were a mixed group (not a problem and we all got on very well), with a wide range of ages (from mid 20s to mid 60s) and a wide range of abilities. Some of us were slower than others during the walks. And the biggest issue was that our leader seemed to be happier to spend his time at the front with the fatest ones, leaving the slowest ones at the back, on their own. Which could have been dangerous in particular with the uneven terrain we were going through. As we were 2 walking groups I am a bit puzzled as to why a test walk wasn't done at the beginning, and groups rescheffuled according to abilities. Advice for Potential Travellers To come physically very well prepared. Attendees will be requested virtually straightaway to walk several hours, on uneven terrain, through 600 to 800 m elevations. These are not moderate walks for your average sedentary customer. And even for the reasonably prepared, 2 hours of going down uneven steps can leave your legs shaking and your calves sore for a few days! Suggestions Amalfi, and Ravello are quite touristic but the hotel is situated in a normal working village, ie not a chocolate box one as often seen on pictures, with a main street with a few shops and several cafes and restaurants, which seems at its most lively in the evening. But we were a bit out of of season. The hotel itself was fine, with a large dining room where guests have their meal, as a group, at large tables, at a fixed time in the evening. The food was adequate, sometimes good, but sadly largely uninspiring for me. Our room was on the 3rd floor, no lift though, with a large terrasse. It was part of a building built more recently, or renovated, and was spacious and clean. The hotel staff seemed pleasant and efficient. I was surprised by the level of tipping requested to the guides, the hotel staff, the bus drivers... The local transport system is very good (buses, ferries) , and on our free day, a few of us in the group managed to organise relatively easily to go and see Salerno, among other places, which gave us a better idea of the life in a local larger city. (And included a lovely cathedral with an impressive crypt)

Beautiful Views, Memorable Moments! I really would recommend this trip for the experiences it offers of the Amalfi coastline and its most fabulous landmarks. The scenery, views and opportunities to savour some of the best of Italian culture did not disappoint and will resonate with me for weeks to come. My only caveat would be for those who are uncertain of their capacity or willingness to endure some strenuous, extended hikes; the scenery certainly made it worthwhile, but some in the group questioned whether the physical demands were too high. This holiday isn’t for anyone looking for leisurely explorations of the Amalfi coast, although the hikes made the comforts of rest, relaxation and tasty food in between all the more appreciated! This was a well organised trip and I met some lovely people too. What’s not to like?! Most Inspirational Moment Walking the crater of Vesuvius and the 'Path of the Gods'! Thoughts on Group Leader Funny, friendly and organised! Advice for Potential Travellers Prepare in terms of fitness and/or consider if this type of walking holiday is what you are looking for.

Garry Ward   -  Traveled, February 2024

Nice trip, good scenery To me, this was a really good little one week trip away. The scenery on the walks Veriano took us on was great. Apart from climbing up Tre Calli the trend on the walks is mostly down hill. A feature of some of the walking is the time spent going down the many many steps in the area. This can agitate sensitive knees. Sometimes the steps are rough stone steps, sometimes they are neatly contructed concrete. Perceptions of how difficult the walking is will obviously vary with ability from one person to another. To me the walking was not difficult and we were on the move for 4-5 hours in total each day but there was never any rush and rest/photo stops were frequent. There is a short section on path of the gods where you might need to get your hands down on the rocks though. The village of Bomerano is small, there are some shops, the opening time of which, to me, were entirely random. I’m sure they weren’t but that’s how it felt. There is a small grocers/convenience shop right next door to the hotel if you want snacks and drinks. The Hotel Due Torri was nice. A relatively small family run hotel. I had no complaints. Any drinks and meals not on the itinery you buy during the week are charged to your room and settled on the last night, rather than pay as you go. Breakfast options were simple but sufficient. The evening meals were high quality and very well prepared and generally very Itallian. Pity Itallian style food is not really to my taste. I have to thank my group mates for feeding me extra of what I wasn’t being fussy about ?? Our free day options came down to visiting Herculaneum or Sorrento and Capri. There were some concerns about whether Capri was going to be in low season slumber like Amalfi and Positano and also if the ferry would run reliabley given the variable weather conditions at the time so most of us chose Herculaneum, which I thought was great, as good as pompei, just smaller. Most Inspirational Moment The day we visited Vesuvius/Vesuvio and Pompei. We walked up to the crater with a specialist and very knowledgeable guide and he then took us away from the (school trip) crowds around the crater of Vesuvio. The views in all directions were fantastic, Naples Bay, Sorrento peninsula, Apennine mountains etc. Looking down into the crater was impressive and awesome with the thought this volcano is going to blow again at some time. Afterwards we drove a short distance to Pompei. This was very interesting and ticked of a long held wish to visit this world famous historic site. For me, it was the best day of the trip. Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent! Our group leader was Veriano. Veriano had good humour, knowledge, patience and flexibility. With any group on a trip like this , there will be a mix of physical ability. No one was left behind. We were in good hands. Advice for Potential Travellers My trip began in late February. This is still winter in southern Italy too. We were gambling with the weather, dodging rain, from start to finish. We were very lucky and never actually needed full rain gear on the trail and had plenty of blue sky while on the trails during the week. The sky did however tend to cloud over in the afternoon. I found weather forecasts available on the internet were not entirely reliable. I'll put this down to the fact we were on a hill top location right on the coast. Temeratures were generally cool 14-16C during the day. The fact this time of year is low season was very apparent in towns like Amalfi and Positano. The advantage being we had the trails almost entirely to ourselves. The roads in the immediate area are narrow and winding. I don't think I was the only one that started to feel a little travel sick in the back of the mini bus.

Dessie Tuck   -  Traveled, April 2024

Really not the best holiday Exodus offer I love the Amalfi coast and was looking forward to this holiday but although as a whole it was a great experience I was left quite disappointed on more than one occasions. I heard from others that other Exodus holidays in other location have been much better. It seems to depend on the local Exodus team rather than on the agency staff in the UK. Most Inspirational Moment Climbing Vesuvius Thoughts on Group Leader He clearly loves trekking and the mountains, but he wasn't the most caring leader. Our group was varied in age, from people in their 20s to others in their 60s, some had health conditions which requited slower pace of walking, but our leader was always at the front with the fastest and youngest, not knowing how the rest of the group are doing, are they coping, are they in pain. If I had his job, I'd like to know where everyone in my group is at all time. On the last day, the slower part of the group was not even given breaks. As soon as they caught up, they had to go again. Some of the activities were not scheduled with our best interest in mind, after climbing Vesuvius and walking around Pompei for hours we had 30 min for a rest in the hotel and had to go to a cheese tasting and then to a pizza making deminstration and then to dinner. Some people refused to go to all these activities. It was just too much for one day. Advice for Potential Travellers Your experience will depend very much on the group leader you get. The hotel was nice, rooms were new and comfortable, but the food at breakfast and dinner was not the best. Not what you'd expect from an Italian holiday and for the money you pay. Suggestions Make sure all groups get the same experience and treatment from their group leader. The other walking group was very happy with their leader and kept telling us how they all felt very cared for, walks were at a pace which was suitable for everyone, no-one was struggling, there were lots of regular breaks. Exodus could split the groups better next time, after the first walk, when everyone's level can be assessed, and people are-distributed according to their ability.

Walking the Amalfi Coast A great trip although sadly the weather was not good for half the week. Amalfi and Positano still very busy with day tripper tourists. Hotel was great and the food was very good. Most Inspirational Moment The views from the Walk of the Gods and Villa Cimbrone were fabulous. The walk around Vesuvius was fantastic. Felt it would have been nice to have a bit more time in Pompeii to see more of the site after the guided tour. The guides were excellent. Thoughts on Group Leader Very good. Advice for Potential Travellers This trip is definitely not suitable for those who can’t manage lots of steep steps and descents. I felt that the walking pace was very slow due to members of the group not matching their perceived abilities with the demands of the walks.

Carole-Anne Sims   -  Traveled, September 2023

Beautiful Amalfi coast! It goes without saying the Amalfi coast really is stunning! All the places we visited had a picture postcard view and the weather was 100% perfect! Most Inspirational Moment The free day trip to Capri. Having travelled solo and meeting with four other solo ladies we quickly struck up a fantastic rapport from the beginning. We had many great times throughout the week however the day trip to Capri exceeded my expectations. Another special time was on the day of departure when the five of us ventured into Bomerano and found Agriturismo Il Pettirosso. An absolute gem! A little out of the way from the main town so not good in the sense of safe footpaths however the meal served was the most authentic and delicious meal of the week along with local wine. Perfecto!! Thoughts on Group Leader Veriano is a very capable and knowledgeable group leader with a necessary quick sense of humour. The walks were relatively short compared to other holidays I have done so my only piece of constructive criticism would be to have more time spent enjoying the walk and less time in the extremely busy destinations of Amalfi and Positano. Both of these destinations are interesting and picturesque however the sheer volume of people takes away some of the beauty. Personally I would have preferred to have time to enjoy the views along the way than endure the chaos. The day we walked to Amalfi there was a cruise ship in the port and subsequently there was an overwhelming number of people. Veriano was quick to act of my request to escape by offering an alternative cove of Atrani. That made all the difference and we had a lovely little afternoon on the beach. Advice for Potential Travellers The trip notes are clear about the number of steps down. I would recommend taking at least one pole to relieve the stress on your knees. I don't normally have issue with steps however I was struggling on the second day, even with a pole. I wish I'd used it from the start and it would have made life more comfortable although it's always surprising how quickly the body is able to recover and by day three I was feeling stronger. Suggestions The hotel Due Torri is very comfortable with a pool and poolside bar. This holiday is very popular so there were four Exodus groups of 16 giving the dining area a 'canteen' type feel that was quite oppressive at times due to the noise and bustle. That was the only time you really got a sense of how many Exodus people were around. It didn't impact on breakfast as people drifted down at differing times and sitting around the poolside bar wasn't an issue either as it was outside with plenty of seating. I would recommend this trip however don't underestimate the wearing effect of the steps, take a pole and use it from the start.

Good As mentioned in other reviews some of the walks are a bit challenging – mainly on the descent – this was our first walking holiday and after the first day had concerns about if we could stay the course . We did – and whilst still challenging we did enjoy it . Many thanks to our group leader Roberta who kept us safe and informed throughout and maintained a sense of humour even in the face of group moaning ! Hotel is good in respect of all staff who are lovely and service which is great – drinks reasonably priced and cocktails good . Cleanliness and cleaning also excellent . Food was sometimes excellent and sometimes a bit monotonous – especially breakfast . Our room wasn’t brilliant – too small – no drawers and particularly difficult on wet day with nowhere to hang anything to dry out . Other rooms much better . Our group mix was excellent a highlight of the holiday . Overall a good trip with just a few niggly bits Most Inspirational Moment Visit to Pompeii . The views on all the walks . The Group :) Thoughts on Group Leader Roberta Advice for Potential Travellers Check room allocation /facilities before you go

Walking the Amalfi Coast mix of walks along beautiful coast with trips to Pompeii, Herculanium and towns Most Inspirational Moment Mt Vesuvius Thoughts on Group Leader Veriano was superb, always kept a careful eye, changed itinerary to reflect the weather, ensured we had appropriate stops and water breaks, was kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable. Advice for Potential Travellers lots of steps but not difficult walking

A great walking experience on the Amalfi Coast Well organised walks, expertly led by the Italian Guide, Veriano. Most Inspirational Moment Walking round the crater of Vesuvius Thoughts on Group Leader Veriano Advice for Potential Travellers Walks are great but can be a bit challenging, however the guide stopped frequently and none are too long. Suggestions Very good guide, excellent food at the Hotel due Torri, friendly group.

Stepping it in style An excellent way to get to know the beautiful Amalfi Coast. There was a lot of walking & very many steps, but we knew that from the Exodus trip notes, & had prepared. The weather wasn’t entirely reliable, no surprise in February, but most days were dry after a wet start. The accommodation was good, with like vely food & drink and the kitchen visits to see preparation of local specialities were great. Transport was provided by local minibus drivers, who were very careful on the twisty roads. Veriano, our group leader, was lovely, knowledgeable & well connected locally, so he gave us a great time. He had to recast our first day totally due to bad weather, but still found a good alternative walk. Most Inspirational Moment Climbing to the summit of Vesuvius & even a little way into the crater, to stand by the monitoring equipment among steaming fumaroles. Thoughts on Group Leader Veriano was excellent. He is a local, and knew exactly where to take us & who to introduce us to. He was very helpful when group members had minor problems. At the same time, he was not too intrusive. Advice for Potential Travellers We felt we'd chosen a great time of year for our trip. Hotspots like Amalfi, Positano, Pompeii & Vesuvius were busy enough, & must be very crowded in high season. The lack of crowds more than made up for the odd bit of rain. Do take seriously the trip note advice about all the steps, particularly as very many of these are irregular rocky steps rather than even, man-made ones.

A fantastic holiday - Thank you! I loved this holiday and would thoroughly recommend it. The lovely Level 2 walks were accurately described in the itinerary (apart from the paper mill being currently shut). I loved the way we did more than walk – we swam in the sea, ate ice-cream and then had a magical boat trip at dusk back to Amalfi after doing the Path of the Gods. The guides (both Stefano) at Vesuvius and Pompeii were excellent. We seemed to pack a lot in – more than we would have managed if we’d organised it ourselves. The three-star hotel was comfortable and the staff very friendly and welcoming. The food was good and sometimes excellent. It was fun to go into the kitchen on two evenings to “help” with the tiramisu and pizza. We didn’t need 2 first courses / primos a night, though, and often opted to drop one of the four courses or share one of each. I’ve done several Exodus trips now and Vania has been the best guide I’ve had so far. Generous with her time. The weather was mixed. Thank you for jigging the itinerary so that we did the Path of the Gods in beautiful weather. The cloud was down for Vesuvius so we didn’t see as much as we might have done. But the towns were not too busy and we were the only group in the hotel. It was never too hot! A lovely holiday – thank you!

Never a dull moment! While I anticipated a week of trail hikes, our guide added several events to make the week a cultural event as well. To begin, the scenery is spectacular. Added to that, our guide Veriano shared his deep passion for the area and its culture. We enjoyed the morning challenges of the trails, then shared in the preparation and/or consumption of those gourmet products in the afternoon. It was the best of both worlds. Our guide was extremely knowledgable about the history and vegetation of the area, having been born and raised there. In addition there were opportunities to appreciate the history first hand by climbing Mt Vesuvius and visiting Pompei. The experience left me with a great appreciation for the area and left me with a lifetime of memories. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the remaining caldera of Mt Vesuvius was indeed impressive and then walking on the pumice still adorning the Amalfi coast, many miles distant provided a new impression of the catastrophe that occurred in 79 AD. Also, I was struck by the presence of herbs growing wild all over the region in the hills. Thoughts on Group Leader As I stated above, our group leader was fantastic. He was clearly passionate about his roots there, which was infectious for all of us. His knowledge of everything local was unsurpassed. He kept our days light hearted and ensured the safety of all. He has a great sense of humor, yet maintained order in the group with excellent leadership skill. This is my second trip with Exodus, and thus far, I have experienced two phenomenal group leaders. Advice for Potential Travellers Although this trip was designated moderate in difficulty, it is far less challenging than the hiking around Mont Blanc in France. Still, I would recommend that participants spend time walking and hiking on a regular basis prior to the trip. There are some rather challenging inclines. Show less

Amalfi Fantastic week nice hotel good food and well organised trip all round. Thoughts on Group Leader Vania De Paoli was Excellent. Thoroughly knowledgeable of the area, extremely enthusiastic and went out of her way to be sure everyone had a great time. Advice for Potential Travellers Thoroughly recommend both the experience of this holiday and Exodus Travel. Suggestions This was first time with Exodus and definitely go with them again.

Worth all those steps for the food and the views The weather in March was mixed, but we only got wet once or twice. In general the weather was good for walking, and later in the week there was plenty of sun. Most places looked like they were just getting reason for the season, with much painting and repairs being done. Being this early meant most places were quiet, so no queuing or traffic jams. Most Inspirational Moment Walking the crater rim of Vesuvius with a local expert was very interesting. Seeing the scale of Pompeii, again with a local expert guide. The Path of the Gods had great views. Eating a gelato in Amalfi in the sunshine mid-week was in marked contrast to after the first walk when the waves were crashing on the beach. Watching the hotel chef making various pizzas, and then eating as much as I could manage. Thoughts on Group Leader Severio obviously enjoys his job, and reordered the schedule to make the most of the varying weather. Living locally meant he knew the area very well. I would certainly recommend him as a guide. Advice for Potential Travellers There are indeed a lot of steps (mostly down), although generally in good condition. For someone who lives in a flat part of the UK, the first few days were hard going at times, We were very well fed every evening, and the local house wine was very good value. The boat trip from Amalfi to Capri on the free day was fun, and included a bit of sightseeing of the Capri coastline on arrival. Even in March the buses between Capri and Anacapri were busy, so getting around took a lot of time. The Path of the Gods ends in Positano and we were lucky that the return boat ride had just started. Any earlier and it would have been a return by bus. Suggestions As recommended, a walking pole was very useful at times.

Walking the Amalfi Coast A fantastic week of walking. Scenery is stunning. Food is delicious. Hotel great. Lovely group and a great leader. Most Inspirational Moment Walking the Mount Vesuvius crater in the sunshine ?? Thoughts on Group Leader Severio Advice for Potential Travellers Itinerary can change depending in the weather so “go with the flow” as even the group leader can’t summon up the sunshine. Do the Mount Vesuvius crater …it really isn’t that scary and those in my group who didn’t do it were so disappointed when we fed back to them about how accessible it is. A good level of fitness is required as there are a lot of steps!!

Onwards and upwards Great walking along the trails, and steps, along the Amalfi coast staying at a family run hotel with good food, excellent service and wonderful hospitality. Most Inspirational Moment All the walks were inspirational but, possibly, the Path of the Gods was the most inspirational. Thoughts on Group Leader The trip was made particularly special by our group leader Theresa; she went well over and above expectations. A lovely lady who showed great knowledge of the area, emphasis on safety of all the group, keen to share individual’s interests and desire to help to arrange extra activities. A truly professional guide who showed a great sense of humour and caring nature. Theresa is a great asset to Exodus. Advice for Potential Travellers Read all the information sent by Exodus and you will be well informed and well prepared. Suggestions We benefitted from upgrading to a Superior Room so that we had the advantage of relaxing in our own jacuzzi bathtub each day after walks - no aches for us ( particularly beneficial as we were the eldest in the group).

Photos don't do it justice! This was my partners and my first exodus and group walking tour and we couldn’t have been happier with how the week went! We were by far the youngest’s on our tour but we still had a lot of fun mixing and getting to know each of our tour members. You stay in a small town up in hills away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist towns. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Nico our guide is very informative about the local area from the towns, landscapes, were to eat, which beaches to go to, organized extras like local limoncello tasting and very helpful if you needed to know anything from wear to buy new shoes if yours fell apart to bus routes and timetables. The scenery you get to take in is amazing and are your typical postcard pictures! The treks are 80-90% down hill with alottttt of stairs with the exception of Mt Vesuvius and Monte Tre Calli, if you can make it through Day 1 – Monte Tre Calli then the rest of the week is a breeze! Most Inspirational Moment Walking around the crater of Mt Vesuvius, finishing all the treks every day, taking in the amazing scenery from the top of the mountains. Thoughts on Group Leader Nico was great, had loads of information to tell us and answered just about every question thrown at him and would give us a detailed briefing for the next days adventure every night using his map. Advice for Potential Travellers The tour notes state you need hiking boots however you can get away with some good sturdy trail/trekking shoes which will save you the space and weight of heavy hiking boots. If you go in summer take a water bottle you can refill at the many taps they show you along the way, shorts and shirts are fine however also wise to pack a pair pants for the days when you tackle the tracks that are quite overgrown.
